Post subject:  74 dart exhaust pipe

Hi all,

Today I was going to replace the gasket where the exhaust pipe meets the manifold. When I removed the nut and bolt, the flange was completely broken off from the pipe. I am new to this, and I need some help and direction from the experts here. Does the pipe separate from the muffler? I couldn't see just by looking at it. If it does, how? And is the exhaust pipe something I can get at napa or similar auto parts stores? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Replacement headpipes used to be available pre-bent from parts stores, but they've long been discontinued. A reputable independent exhaust shop (not a chain place like Midas, Meineke or Speedy) will be able to make and install a new headpipe. You may want to take this opportunity to install a 2¼" headpipe as the factory did starting a few years after your car was made, rather than your original 1¾" headpipe — this will improve your driveability, performance, and fuel economy.

Unless your muffler and tailpipe are relatively new, it's likely they'll need replacing as well.
