I have read in a couple places that there are coolant drain plugs in the block. My engine runs hot, so I thought that there might be some debris clogging the block. It sat for awhile before I bought it. I found one plug on the passenger rear side, but when I pulled it out, it was clogged with grease. I hope that was the wrong plug. If not, I don't think that is a good sign. Anyone out there know if I got the right plug, and if not, where are the plugs I'm looking for. Thanks for any help you can give.
Thanks,
Wylde Bill

There is only one drainplug as far as I know. It is on the oil pump side of the block about 8" or so back from the pump. On some blocks there is alo an oil gallery plug about in the same area. :D

You probally pulled and oil galley plug. A word of caution with the "drain plug" that Slantzilla is talking about. Most of them on older enginges are rust welded in place. So shoot PB Blaster (not WD) for a few days before trying to remove.

IIRC, the plug should be a 1/4 NPT plug with a square "head" on it. If that's what you pulled, it should be the right one. I'd stick a small screwdriver in the hole and wiggle it around a bit to see if it'll let any coolant out. If you get coolant, it's probably a good assumption that the rest of the block (and likely the head) has a lot of gunk built up. I'd get some coolant flush at Napa and flush the whole cooling system out. I'll be doing that this summer with mine, along with installing a new radiator and heater core (or at least having new ones "standing by" in case I discover a leak that had been covered by gunk and remained hidden).

I pulled the head today to get a look at the cylinders before I ordered an engine kit. The cylinders look perfect. Not a mark on them anywhere. Either this motor was rebuilt sometime, or these motors are even tougher than I thought. I did find a couple of the coolant passages clogged with rust. Not much, just enough to impede water flow. I was able to poke through it with my finger. I'm sure that was what was causing the motor to run hot. Since I don't need to rebuild the bottom end, I can now afford to put in one of the Erson cams and have the head cut down a bit for more compression. I have a rebuilt head coming in on Tuesday, then I'll cc it and check the depth of my pistons to see how much I need to cut. Thanks to everyone for they're help.
