Post subject:  Positive Locking Valve Seals
Looking for something over the counter if possible. I just checked out my new seals that my machinist threw on and all the intake seals are cracked all the way around. Seems kind of stupid to not replace them since everything else is fresh. I wasn't sure if you could get anything but rubber umbrella seals.

I would stick with the umbrella type, just replace them with new ones. The positive sealing type require machining of the guide bosses and have their own set of drawbacks anyway.

Pat: Im putting my motor together and have a fresh new FelPro US gasket set. I use Chev valves (with cool seals) ....you are welcome to these ones if you want. They could be there Tues in the mail....or if you want them Monday Alex could drop them at the Junction on his way to Spokane. 1-866-902-3399

My builder used a positive type seal, however they have a spring wrapped around the top. I saw pics of them online before. Apparently it is to meter the amount of oil that gets to the guide.

Thanks anyways Sandy, I just grabbed a set from Lordco. The weather's been so nice, I can't pass up the opportunity to wrench outside.

are you running a higher lift cam, if so did the mechanist clearance the retainer and the guide, with the stock valve seals they can be squat in between and damaged, you need .050 + cam lift from retainer bottom and guide top. :?:

don't know....I gave him cam specs including spring pressures and total lift at the valve. guess I will have to check that before the head goes on! :oops:

Bren, mine looked different then those. The outer metal shell on mine was sold and the spring on the top was like a coil spring that only wrapped around it once, like an axle or wheel bearing seal.

I've seen a couple of different types but they all work basically the same way. Other than the extra maching required the main problem with them is that they can keep the guides too dry. This can result is excessive guide wear and even galling.

If the guides are in good shape the umbrella seals are adequate for most applications.
