If I wanted to add a 4 bbl car and intake to my stock 225, what else would I have to add to it to get a good performance upgrade?

the first thing i did to my motor probly a year back was headers/ 4bbl intake and a 4bbl carb i used the 390 cfm vacuum secondary holley it was too rich but i never did any tuning at that time and i picked up close to 1 second at the track (12.8 1/8mile with bad r/t) (11.9 great r/t and headers/intake/4bbl)

Well, I've built a couple engines and the biggest problem with the slant six is the castings are particularly bad in the ports. Next you have to work with small ports on top of a less desirable bore-stroke ratio. So what else do you need to do for performance?
A four barrel is nice, if you are budget concious a super six will do a lot of what your talking about. Headers are nice too, but with both these options you going back to port. So if you really want to get some performance with these upgrades you need to go ahead and pull the head and gasket match the ports to the header and intake. Take a gasket and bolt it to the head and grind away.
If you want a nice cam upgrade will really help, and you can do a lot of all this without a ton of money or a ton of down time. A couple weekends and this will be a nice butt kicker this racing season.

I have run a 390 Holley, Offy intake, and headers on a couple different bone stock motors in my '66. Tune it up correctly and it will reward you with really good performance. :D

If you really want results, add a good torque converter and some deeper gears in the rear end.

Good point. Slantzilla is dead nuts on, I'm not saying the the carb and headers won't be nice, I just personally have a nudge for them. First it's what all the chevy guys do to there 350 which adds 125hp ya know, and second I've even had problems of too much carb. The slant seems to be pretty resilant but I know you can choke out a 302 real quick.
GEARS! Are defintley what made my car faster. Unfortunatley you don't have overdrive (I'm assuming) so I wouldn't get too greedy, I really like 3.55 behind a four speed and it should liven it up. I know the 4.10 are like shift-shift and spin 3000rpm going 60mph, not that much fun on a daily driver. All in all good luck.

My Valiant with a bone stock '80 long block, 390 Holley, Offy intake, Clifford headers, 3000 converter and 3.91 gears has gone low 16's@80 mph through the exhaust. I always though that was pretty good for a 3250# car.

Im going to argue that $300 worth of cam and head shave will get you further than $800 worth of headers and carbs.

Is it a lot of work?

Is it a lot of work? I don't quite understand the question???? Lot's of things could fall under this catorgory... is it a lot of work to restore a 75' Duster? Yeah. Is it a lot of work to do all the things we've listed and thrown out? Maybe. Is it a lot of work to spunk up your slant six to 200 horses? Nah....
The $300 could go a long way. I had a Cam grinder spin me a cam of 270 duration and .44 lift for $85. Next, I had the head shaved .1 for $60. The valves and guides came from engrbldr (sp?) for $80. The three angle and installation will take up the rest of the money real easy. Assuming your bottom end is good this is a potent little engine. I've done it and if your comb through it this is pretty much the norm, there's variations, but this is the norm.
Changing out rears is a personal choice, I know 8 1/4's are pretty easy to come by with awesome gears that should go under the Duster with little work, and 8.8 is even better but a lot more work.
Bren, how are the headers treating you? I never installed them on the slant so pretty much I'm asking were they worth it? Next a 4 barrel is useless if you can't tune it in... so there's so more work if you don't have a good background in that. I've always felt that a pair of headers and an Offy are the most expensive things to put on a slant so I always held off of them. Frankly, IF you match the ports to the exhaust manifold I think you will be very satisfied with the results. So $250 or a $25 port and polish kit? Which seem to produce more for the buck? Well, you know my opinion.

Well there not leaking, kind of have a cool air rushing sound at higher RPMs, and look good. As for preformance, I havn't had it to the track yet so I really don't know for sure, but it seems faster.
The guys at the shop where I had the rear gears changed had this to say after I told them this. "Last time at the track it ran 15.33. Now I have lower gears (3.55), cold air intake, bettter converter, headers and new exhaust design, I better be in the 14s." They said I might miss the 14s and hit the 13's

I pretty sure they were joking though.

I dont bet...I only argue.

Just watch me in LV....no betting...only "discussing"

If I can run low 16s with a BBD and stock exhaust manifold will I win my argument?
