I think I might tackle a diff rebuild. I have the 225 with a 1976 A833OD behind it, my current original axel is 7.25 with 3.23 ratio. I'm shopping around for what I need but I need someone to give me a list of everything I need to rebuild my unit. While doing this it looks like these are my choices of ratios 2.26, 2.76, 2.94,3.21,3.55, and 4.10. Regarding economy please advise which ratio I should go with. I will also be running with 23" tires close to if not stock size.
Thanks a bunch,
Brian

The 3.23's would be economical with your combination depending on your build... The 3.55's would be a good choice (nice really fun gearing in the 1-2-3, then highend traffic/highway economy with the OD gear...in the hpak duster I can shift out of 3 into OD when I'm at cruise rpms at 45 mph, and just lug the fat turkey around...)... 4.10's would be very fun but not in the first three gears for economy... something like 3.73/3.91's might be more of a 'compromise'...

3.23 or 3.55 would be right down the middle

As DI sez 3.73 or 4.10 for sport

What's wrong with the current differential?

My current differential is the original which looks okay but I can only imagine the amount of wear it has compared with a new one. I'm not dead set on the rebuild yet, should someone tell me that unless it's broke I'm fine with what I have and/or there are any advantages to rebuilding a 45 year old differential. I believe the car has always been driven gently and not raced at any time so it may be just fine and the only thing I change will be the bearings.
Thanks for the posts fellas,
Brian

Once you start pricing parts you'll probably want to leave it alone. My feeling is that if much more than an axle bearing goes on a 7 1/4 it's time to look for another rear end. I got lucky and found the 3.21 geared 8 1/4 I wanted for $150. The brakes from my big bolt pattern 7 1/4 moved over and I found a driveshaft at Wildcat Auto Wrecking for $60 so the swap was relatively cheap.
