You look at the cover and count the bolts...
10 and round = 8.25"
9 and roughly hexagonal = 7.25"

How do you tell the difference between the 7 1/4 and 8 1/4 diffs without pulling the cover? Also, can you can you interchange axles or are they specific to each diff? Thanks, Pat. |

7 1/4 has 2 1/2" axle tubes and an 8 1/4 has 3" axle tubes. |
