Post subject: | HEI wires |
I went to the junkyard today with The Other Rob and we pulled a module to do the HEI conversion. We ended up pulling one of the GM all-in-one types off a 97 S-10. Now, in the HEI article it says to get an appropriate coil-to-distributor cap wire because of the differences in the ends, however how do I figure out what the appropriate coil wire is? I think the rain and cold have sludged my brain up.. time to sit next to the heater to dry out and have a beer. |

A 1997 HEI module would be for computer controlled timing. This page in the Megasquirt manual has pinouts for a lot of common HEI modules. I'm assuming you are not in fact using some sort of computer in combination with the HEI system, in which case you'd leave the E, R, and B pins disconnected. |

It's not the pins that I'm concerned about, it's finding the correct coil-to-distributor spark plug type wire. I'm not sure which application to go by, and was hoping somebody could tell me. Do I need the coil-to-distributor wire that would ordinarily go on the 97 S-10? Or can I just use a universal type wire? Or something different than either one of those? |

Not necessarily. The 4-pin module was used up through at least 1997 in some applications; see discussionhere.Stephanie, a coil-to-distributor-cap cable from any 1991 or later Chrysler Corp vehicle that used the compact E-core ignition coil will work. This includes all the 2.2 and 2.5 litre 4-cylinder cars (Shadow/Sundance, Spirit/Acclaim, LeBaron, Voyager, Caravan...) as well as Dakota pickups and others. That coil looks like this: ![]() |

Thanks Dan! All these parts mixing around gets to be too much sometimes and I wasn't sure which cable would connect the GM module and the Mopar distributor cap. I'll head down to the parts store tomorrow. |

Go scroll through the HEI upgrade article, and you'll see the GM combination module/coil assembly Stephanie's using. It includes a coil with a male output terminal rather than the female type used on our stock coils and many replacements. Stephanie, you'll likely find you can't get just the coil wire; they'll want you to buy a whole set of plug wires. If that's the case, and you don't feel like arguing, specify a wire set for a 1992 Dodge Spirit with 2.5 litre engine. Turbo or non-turbo, same wires. But actually, having said that...how long of a coil wire do you need? |

What ever wire you have running from your coil to the center post of your distributer cap now is fine. The wires you need to make go from the + and - of the coil to the HEI module and to the 2 wires on the MOPAR electonic distributer, you did get one of those too right? ![]() |

Post subject: | Stephanie, I have a spare wire you need if U want it |
Stephanie, I have one of the wires you need. I got it as an extra in a ebay deal, and would be glad for you to have it...is $2 to much? I am using an E core solid state coil is why I needed that kind of wire, so got 2 of em. rock '64d100 |

Interesting. I looked up the wiring diagram for a 1997 and it turns out that it was computer controlled - but GM was using the computer to imitate the trigger signal that a 4 pin module would get. So this would make the S10 module a sort of weird hybrid - it's a 4 pin module that has been placed under computer control. |

Get a spare. No joke. I have NEVER had any good luck with any Accel products, save for their wires. When I first did the HEI conversion, I used an Accel module and it didn't even last 200 miles. I had to have my buddy tow me back to the base with his pickup after our squadron picnic ![]() |

...except for the minor problem that it won't fit.
