| Post subject: | Dash/cluster grounding |
Somewhat related to my other post... Currently I have the cluster removed from my dash, along with several other components. Would it be wise/necessary to run a few ground wires? If so, where from? As far as the cluster, would it be a good idea to ground it to the frame or dash with additional grounding wires? If so, which bolts on the cluster? It seems so fragile...I was thinking one of the bolts next to the speedometer cable? |

well considering that the cluster is grounded by the 4 screws holding it to the dash, i think that the 4 of them should be satisfactory... Someone want to chime in ? |

Yes the instrument cluster is chassis grounded like everything else on these cars. I really dont think an additional ground wire is nessesary but if I was bound to add one it woud be from one of those screws that grond the printed circuit board to the gauge housing and close to the lower center. Then from there down to one of the steering column mounting studs. An additional nut would be needed rather than placing a wire terminal under one of those sprocket washers. Certain year models have a ground jumper wire there from the factory to insure column grounding. |

I would strongly recommend cleaning the ground screws and all contact areas carefully before reassembly, perhaps using a contact enhancer/preservative, but I've never seen an A-body dash fail to ground properly. I have seen an E-body dash give ground problems, but it ended up being due to careless assembly, and a correctly assembled AMC dash have grounding problems. An extra ground certainly can't hurt at these low frequencies. I would also recommend that you inspect the pins on the round connector carefully, as I've seen them work a little loose and cause intermittant problems. |
