Post subject:  STUPID %&*#$ KEY BUZZER!!!

I am about to start tearing wires apart to silence this confounded key/in door/open buzzer!

I looked at the schematic in my service manual and it confused me. I am afraid if I disconnect the wrong wire, the door switch for the dome light will stop working.

Car is a 1973 Dart.

Is there anyone who can tell me how to do this correctly?

Thanks much!

Chris E.

Yeah, find the buzzer and unplug it.

I'm not sure about 73, but on my 71 the buzzer / horn relay is the same unit - its just above the drivers kick panel. It has 2 harness leads going to it, a larger (3 wire?) and a smaller 1 or 2 wire, I forget. Unplugging the larger one stoped the buzzer with 0 other ill effects, the dome light and everything else still worked as expected.

I don't have my 73 manual in front of me, but if you just unplug the buzzer itself, I'm pretty sure the dome light will continue to work. You could also just remove and insulate the one wire from the ignition switch connector, but I can't tell you the color offhand, but I'd guess it was black. You could use a test light to identify the one wire, and the proper tool will let you pop the pin out of the connector w/o damage.

thanks guys,

That was the other thing. I see the buzzer on the schematic but have no clue where it is in the car.

I,ll try the kick panel area.

Thanks much,

Chris

My 82' Lebaron Convertible has been dinging when the driver's door is open with or with out the key in the ignition form day one when I took delivery of it with 9 miles on the odometer. I suspect it is the little nylon tit that pokes down from the key cylinder mounted in the steering column is stuck. When the key is removed it should retract, but dosen't. That little nylon part activates the dinger by contacting a switch.

Crud will get in to that key assembly and cause the nylon tit to stick. The little tit is deployed by the lower edge & tip of the ignition key when it is inserted into the lock.

I don't recall when Detroit went to the silly column mounted ignition switches. Dose your car have this column set up, or is the key switch properly located in the dash?

In the early 70's, all 73-76 A-bodies will have the key in the column (and the column lock feature...)

I'm with Joshie...
Find the buzzer and kill it, rather than hunting for a can of worms.

I think it was 1970, my brother in laws 69 valiant has the key in the dash and my 70 is on the column

On my 75, I opened the door, listened for the buzz and traced it down. I then unplugged it and threw it in the trash. Everything on my car still works.

I just used my ear to find the little bugger.

Where is the buzzer? I'm having cluster problems and I want the buzzer to work. What does it look like and where is it under the dash?

I have at least two plugs under the dash on the wiring harness coming from behind the kickpanel that are not connected. Haven't identified them yet.

The buzzer on my 73 is at the top of the drivers kick panel
