Post subject:  904 tranny not shifting gears

I just did an engine swap, and put my 904 back in and now it wont shift gears. The only thing I did was drain the fluid then replaced the gasket and filled her back up. Any ideas?

First, what year is the trans?
Second, Does it go in any gear? or does it seem to stay in neutral? Does it go in park (actually prevent the car from moving)? How many quarts of fluid did it take to refill.

It is a 73 tranny, I think I put 8 quarts in and it drives in drive and reverse, but right around the time it should shift into second it starts to hesitate and kinda miss fire or something. You can hear it like it has reached its limit for first gear sayin hello im still in first. lol.

I would check the kickdown linkage. It sounds like it could be adjusted too long, or not connected properly. If you did not drain the old fluid from the converter, 8 qts of fluid might be too much. Make sure you did not over fill the trans (that is not the cause of your problem).

You were right, the kick down was binding up on the shift linkage. Thanks a million, however I have a new problem. The car is staling out when you give it to much gas to fast. I have the timing dead on. The old motor did this as well. I have two ideas, fuel line to big, old distibuter advance timing thing that the vacume hooks up too, what do you think?

There are a few things that can cause this. The most likely is a problem with the accelerater pump in the carb. Might want to start posting in the engine forum, for the driveability problems.
