I throw them in the garbage or shoot 'em at bystanders. They go around the caliper mount so the caliper is less likely to rattle. I find my calipers don't rattle as long as the spring retainer plate is in decent shape.

They're so you can play along with that old 70's tune "Rubberband Man" by the Spinners... I have yet to see a set installed or actually work...
Like Josh said if the hardware is good, they won't rattle...

I've been trying to figure out where they go too. Brennan explains where they go in the following post:

There is photo in the following post that shows them installed:
http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20839

However, I've looked at the photo carefully several times and it's still not very clear. It almost looks like the rubber bands hold the pads on the caliper. I can only see (or imagine I see) a single rubber band holding the outboard pad (facing forward).

My service manuals seem to indicate that the rubber bands (or "O" rings) actually go around the machined ways of the caliper adapter. The diagram shows them installed in the ways' corner.

Even if the bands break after repeated service as Brennan suggests, I don't think it would hurt to install them in the first place.
