Post subject:  A833 OD question

I have a 76' A833 OD, had it looked at by the mechanic before installing he said everything looked good. I crawled under the car the other day and noticed the transmission is wet with oil. I'm thinking the seals dried out while sitting around and are now leaking, would that be a correct assessment ? I did turn out the drain bolt to be sure there was oil in the case and there is so it's not empty. Should I pull this out and replace the seals and just get it over with?

There are 'several' scenarios with the aluminum cased OD tranny that can happen to weep oil....

1) the paper seals didn't seal... you'll be tearing the tranny down to replace all of them....

2) the side plate and or body has warped and they don't seal... in which case, you will be 'gooping' the plate shut with RTV...

3) the shift lever O-rings are tanked... so you'll have to open it up replace them and probably do #2 to be on the safe side...

4) the rear seal is brittle/worn and while it's parked it drools a bit when you are parked up hill or in the driveway...

5) The plug in front of the countershaft is weeping/ was not inspected real well and you'll need to pull the tranny from the bellhousing, apply goop, cure and reinstall...

6) The bearing retainer seal needs replacing...

7) The mechanic never opened the case, and some of the case bolt holes have had over tightened bolts put in them and the threads are a bit stripped or have broken peices of the case off and are allowing some oil to weep past the bolts (you get more weepage in each instance if you used ATF instead of 90 wt...

good luck...I know the headache well...

The unit is case iron, the heavy one. The mechanic did pull the top off I saw it off when he inspected it and told me it was an over drive and not a 4 speed. Regardless thanks for the info, I don't mind the work it's just I don't have a helper to help lift the darn thing but I'll manage, got too right?

I hear ya, I have one of those out of a '75 dart and it's destined for the next build, those versions can reallly cause a hernia... make sure to use proper lift technique to save your back...

good luck,

Post subject:  overdrive in a three speed car

Hi,
I am redoing my DD Sport 1975 and want to go from a three speed on the column to a floor shift and was hoping to use the 833 OD transmission. Can someone give me a briefing of what I need to do? I have also looked into the Keisler 5 speed but thought the Chrysler unti might be easier??

Keisler doesn't offer a slant six bellhousing anymore. They might make you one if you called them up and asked, but don't count on it...

I had not heard Keisler stopped making the bell housing. I had gotten an estimate from them a few months back for a unit for my car. I wonder what give? Any response to my question concerning the Chrysler OD unit install?

Doc (THE Man) just posted the link to our article system on the A-833 units...

For your 3 to 4 speed swap...

Floor hump (possible new carpet replacement)
Bellhousing
A-833OD tranny from 1975-1976 A-body/1976-1980 F-body
Driveline yoke for the tranny
Tranny shifter, shift lever, shift rods/linkage
If picky about the steering column's shift lever being in the way... you will need a steering column from a 1973-1976 A-body that had the A-230 or A-833/A-833OD floor shift option... and match/swap parts so it will fit your particular electrical plug ins and your manual/power steering shaft needs...

Be fore warned I bought a 4 speed hump from Dante's. They have to have metal added to them to fit 74 on back to 67 A bodies. Only one company repops them and everyone sells it. I am pissed that I have to fab that.

Why in the farkle they made it for the 75-76's is beyond my wisdom!

More of the 74-67's out there

There's no change in that section of the pan between 67-and 76... I just put and OEM hump from a 74 into my 67 and it's exactly the same as the '76 version... the change in the pan is under the driver's seat for the cat. convertor....

The hump in my 74 does not match the repop I bought.
