lots of folks are talking about installing the ford exploder's 8.8" rear into a-bodys... did yall know that the newer exploders have an independant rear!? although they appear much larger going down the road, i wonder what the feasability of an installation of this unit would entail... |

There is almost zero chance anything lines up....the track is too wide. A better similar swap might be a Mustang IRS ...it uses many of the same components. Still little chance anything lines up.....still too wide. |

2nd Generation ('86-'91) RX-7s have IRS and are 5 on 4.5". The subframe with the differential, axles and brakes comes out easily enough. I should measure my '87 RX-7 and see how the width compares to my Valiant. Mark 3 Supras, 5-lug 300ZXs and 5-lug Conquests/Starions are all 5x4.5". |

That's OK. Google is your friend though. I had an '87 Chrysler Conquest TSi built by Mitsubishi. 2.6L intercooled turbo. The Mitsubishi branded variant was the Starion. Folks frequently refer to them as Starquests. The two worst parts of the car were the MCA Jet-valve head and the throttle body injection system. Nice car otherwise.

Donors I've thought about using for an IRS include the Miata (right track width, good geometry, wrong bolt pattern, everything on a subframe) or a Nissan 300ZX from the mid-'80s (right bolt pattern, everything's on a subframe, so-so suspension geometry). Some of the new SUVs may make good suspension donors but you're talking major fabrication no matter what you pull the suspension off of. |
