| Post subject: | Sure Grip v.s Auburn (and others) |
Hey all, Is there any difference in performance between a Sure Grip rear end and say an Auburn limited slip diff? Auburn claims their stuff is "more agressive" than the Chrysler SUre Grip. Presumably the Auburn stuff locks up more often than the Sur Grip does--any way, I am wondering if it is the difference can be noticed. I want to put a limited slip in the back end of my D150 so I don't get stuck on a wet blade of grass any more. Also, I am waffling between a 3.9:1 or 4.1:1 rear end. I think 3.9 is the tail end of the Sure Grip rings. My D150 truck has the A833 O/D in it so I imagine either will work--wondering what you folks think... |

No, you can sure-grip anything pretty much (I'm trying to remember, but I think even some yutz at chrysler had to design a suregrip for the 2.45 8.25" rear....sheesh...)...If you are using a taller tire I'd go for the 4.11, the 3.91 is about a 2.85 rear ratio and might be a tad high if you have some tall guys under the truck... -D.Idiot |

Well, you never know when you're going to find yourself on a Teflon-paved uphill road in your '82 St. Regis equipped with tires made out of ice... |

I always seem to be agreeing with DI! Depending on what "taller" is to you, yeh there is a place for the 4:11 with the 8833OD.. My 833OD was perfectly matched to my 28 inch tires (265 70 15) and a 3.91 sur grip. Taller than 28 inches...not sure if any taller will fit under the fenders. Mine fill em up. "Taller" means a high (or relatively higher) gear: A 2.26 is a tall final-drive ratio, and a 2.76 is taller than a 3.23. The '64-'65 A833 transmission came with a "deeper" (lower) 3.09 first gear for 6-cylinder applications, and a "taller" (higher) 2.66 first gear for 8-cylinder applications.

If you're looking for the right LSD to use in your rear end (wait what?), you may also want to take a look at Eaton's "Truetrac" setup. It's basically a posi that uses worm gears instead of clutches or springs. Seems to be a very good design from what I've researched on it, though I've only been able to find one actual review of it, and that was on a Jeep site (off-road application). Though they did really like it, so I take that as a plus. It's what I plan on putting in when I build a new rear end for my Duster (that'll be a Dana 60, to allow for a future big block swap). |
