How do you tell what the amps for an alternator are from reading the casing?

Huh? Reading on the casing?? What year are we talking about?
On the alternators since the early 1970's there is a round aluminum tag under one of the screws that holds it together. The tag is stamped with the amp rating. 26A, 37A, 40A, 50A, etc. Usually the tag gets lost when the alternator is repaired. Rebuilders never but the tags back on them. With out the tag or some marking by the rebuilder you can't really tell. You might be able to take the alternator into a shop that has a test bench and they can test the maximum output for you. I'm not familiar with the earlier alternators to know how they were marked.

Hmmmm. What exactly is printed/stamped on the casing of your alternator? If it is a Chrysler number, you should be able to call a local (trusted) auto parts outlet, and they should be able to look it up in their remfgr's cross referance and tell you what it's supposed to be.
If they can't, or claim they don't have a cross-ref., I'd think about questioning that supplier's abilities.
I sold auto parts for 6 years when I was younger, and one thing I prided myself on was knowing my books. It's a shame nowadays that too many counter-persons have no idea that there is a dimensional listing either in the back of the application book, or in a seperate guide.
