Post subject:  Engine Casting #

I'm interested in buying a /6 that that has the following date 11 14 63 and casting # 246340-8, too greasy to find anything else on it. The owner said it came out of a '64 Coronet with a 3 spd manual trans. Is it a 225 or a 198? I'm thinking 225 but I haven't found the casting number anywhere I've looked so far. Heads were supposedly redone to .40 over, new valves, WP, TC, no dist, 1 bbl set up. For $225. Been sitting for a year and a half. Good deal or no?

Check that casting number again, it should be 2463430-8
This is a "3 freeze plug" 225 block, (60-67) and should have the small rear register (small converter) crankshaft.
BTW, 198 engines were not offered until 1970.

You're missing a digit. Should be 2463430-8, which is an RG block approx '63 through '67. It could very easily have come out of a '64. If it is all original, it's a 225; the 198 didn't exist until '70. The engine's displacement is indicated not by the casting number, but by the stamping number which is at the top of the block below the frontmost spark plug inboard of the alternator/coil bracket.

How do we redo a head to "40 over"?

How does all that recent(?) rebuild work align with all that grease that's preventing you finding the engine numbers...?

Thanks guys.

typo on the 40 over, should be 30 over...fat fingers. He had the work done in '03, daughtr drove it for a year then wrecked the coronet, been sitting since late '04. I'm slow, but not that slow. He had dated receipts for the head work. There shouldn't be any problem with dropping that into a '74 scamp a/c car should there. Just have to change the flywheel I believe.

I dunno, but if it was cast/born before 1968 it'd be over 40...

 OK, how do we do a cylinder head 30 over? (usually it's the block, not the head, that gets overbored...sometimes it's the owner that gets overbored if he has a lot of tedious work to do...)

If the '74 is automatic, the pre-'68 engine will not fit without a special custom torque converter, some '66-'67 transmission parts and torque converter, or some machinework on the '68-up crank.

I've never swapped a /6 that wasn't the same year engine. So the 11 14 63 dated block is going to need a "special" torque converter to bolt up to the 904 a/t in the '74 Scamp? Is it a converter that I can order up though one of the local tranny shops, any idea on cost? Or am I asking for more trouble by dropping in the '63 engine in lieu of either having the one in there rebuilt or looking for something later?

I'm more of a "it's broke and I can replace it or fix it type of mechanic" I'm on here beceasue I need the help diagnosing and figuring this stuff out. And all of the help and advice is greatly appreciated. believe me.

Post subject:  SL6 Crankshaft Hub Info.

Here is the not so short answer, 60-67 SL6 crankshafts all have a small pilot hole in the rear, where the auto trans converter "nose" fits-int it.
68 and later cranks and auto transmissions have a larger pilot and matching pilot hole.
So you have a combination that will not fit together, basically the small pilot hole in the crank and the large "nose" on the transmission.

I solved this problem on one of these early cranks by machining the pilot hole larger, but the crank was removed to do that work.
You can put a "large pilot" 68 and newer crank into the 63 engine you have, that will allow it to fit with your auto trans.

You can get the special torque converter as Dan noted but these are specially made so I would guess that one would cost some $$, start quoting pricing for one and let us know what you find.
The trans people will call it a 28 spline input shaft with the small 1.56 pilot hub for a 904 Torqueflite.

OK, I liked the not so short answer. Pictures helped alot, thanks. So I may actually be better off passing on the pre '68 engine due to the bolt pattern and wait on a running post '68 that will bolt right up to the newer 904. I'm going to run into one of the tranny places in town tomorrow and check on what the cost would be for the converter. I'm taking the picture along, just in case.

Got a price of $75.oo plus taxes for everything from a place called Don's Garage in Denver, less than a week lead time to have it ready. Good deal or no?
