| Post subject: | donor cars for brakes ? |
I was lookin for a little help everyone said look for a 73+ a body for donor brake parts but besides the aspen & volaire what other cars can i swap from ? And exactaly what parts & what can be bought at say checkers or autozone etc. ? thanks I tried searching but found 16 + pages of disscussion & sorry for such a noob question that I'm sure your all tired of hearing or answering |

UCAs need to come from 73-76 A bodies. Spindles can come from the same car along with all the brake parts. You can also purchase tubular UCAs that have all types of neat camber adjustments and what have you. $$$$! You can also use M-body (Diplomats, 5th Avenues (RWD), New Yorker) or 74 up B body spindles and associated brake parts. This gives you bigger rotors and both are widely available in JYs. There is some controversy about the taller spindles, but I feel its been pretty much put to rest here and elsewhere. I run this set up on my 65 Barracuda w/o any trouble. sb |

On my disk upgrade: Original to my car (64 Valiant): LCA's (reinforced for grins) Parts car items ('74 Duster for mine): UCA's Knuckles Caliper adapters Fasteners (check over carefully) Shield New or rebuilt: Calipers (I used Aspen units, mounted to the rear) Master cylinder (The rebuilt one leaked and has been replaced with new) New: Rotors (JY items might be good enough - check and turn) Hoses Pads Fabricated: Hardlines (single pot to dual circuit swap) I did a lot more at the same time, combining with a front end rebuild. It all had to come out anyway. |

If you get the 1973-1976 A-body spindles all you need is the caliper brackets, calipers, hoses, rotors and bearings from the late B/C bodies it all bolts on... (the thing to remember though is to me sure of the type of caliper you use... some models used 'pin' calipers, and much later some used slider type calipers)...-D.Idiot |

Well to make it easy, any rear drive Chrysler product car newer than 1973 will be a potential donor for rotors, calipers, knuckles, caliper adapters. It is all the same stuff regardles of B/R/FMJ/A/E, etc. The only stuff that won't work is the C body stuff and the light truck/Van stuff. There are four combinations of parts that exist, 11 inch and 11.75 rotors and then pin and slider calipers for each. But any of those setups will work, you just need to match caliper adapters to rotor size and caliper type. I prefer to work with rear hung slider calipers and I would always use the 11.75 rotors unless there was some sort of requirement for 14 inch rims. But that is just me, other combinations work fine. |

I'm glad you said that. I was formulating the question before I finished your post.Big rotors will be my next front brake upgrade - I already have the 11.75" slider adapters waiting, and can use the same calipers. What rotors do you recommend for a street car? The heavy cop rotors? |

Looking at the cars you own in your sig, I assume you're swapping out 9" drums, front and back, for front discs and 10" drums in back. I didn't notice anybody include the proportioning block in their list of parts to grab, so I'll add it here. If it's missing on the donor car, you can get an adjustable, after-market one. Dumping the single-pot master cylinder is a good move: those things are dangerous. |

For rotors there is only one style available anymore. There used to be a standard 11.75 rotor and a HD rotor but the aftermarket ones are all HD version and Chrysler stopped making factory rotors years ago. The real question is which aftermarket rotor to use. I've found that the best rotors are the ones made in Canada but they usually cost about twice as much as the Mexico ones. I think that Bendix still makes a Canada rotor and you can buy it at NAPA if you pay for the "premium" rotor. I've had bad luck with the Mexican rotors. They aren't machined to the proper dimensions for some reason even though they come in a Brembo box. If you're on a tight budget you might try the wrecking yards. I've picked up plenty of rotors over the years at the wrecking yards that still had lots of meat left on them. I've even found brand new rotors and calipers on wrecked cars. Guess some guy pulled out of the garage and got t-boned or something! The grease was still bright green on the bearings and pads hadn't even been bedded in yet. |

Just as an FYI as I recently priced out a set, it looks like anything that is made now is pretty much chinese, I got a set of rotors for my duster and payed the extra for the better set, one box said made in china, the other box said made in columbia, then was stamped on the bottom made in china... Raybestos shows they still make a premium rotor at about $120 per unit and are supposed to be made in the north america... hopefully quality control is still good for these units... it's a real crap shoot in junkyards now, since scrap prices are so high most places are pulling the rotors and drums for the scrap weight rather than leaving them for salvage...-D.idiot |

Good points, my data is getting a little long in the tooth since I haven't messed around with factory brake systems now for a few years. Once I made the switch to the 13 inch stuff I got rid of most of my 11.75 hardware. A few years ago I bought a pallet load of 11.75 rotors at a great deal from the factory and made a little money on the side reselling them. I also used to have a rather large collection of 11.75 adapters but those are long gone. The tall adapter needed to hang slider calipers onto the 11.75 rotor would seem like a good part for the aftermarket to reproduce. It isn't a really tough part to cast but nobody has stepped up to the plate yet. Might be a good idea for someone on this board who wants to get into casting parts. |

Thanx for the help everyone so ill need : from a donor car the upper control arms streeing knuckles / spindles then after market rotors , calipers pads of corse ,new master cylinder ,hoses & propotioning valve what about bearings & races ? & for the 10" rear drums what wil this require ? cause i plan on doing this to my dart first to the daughters valiant |

Hey you guys, I have the spindles, calipers, etc., from a '73 Dart; where can I get the bolts that hold the adapter to the back of the spindle? I have everything else, I just need these bolts. Thanks, thanks, thanks!!! |
