Post subject:  904 from HELLL!!!

I have a '68 904TF from a 318 which I recently rebuilt because it chewed the rear clutch pack. I thought the reason they failed was because of over heating (the converter builder put the stator clutch in backwards).

When I pulled it apart to rebuild it I couldn't find any noticable reason why the clutches had failed other than serious overheating. I replaced everything and was extremely careful with the piston seals.

It has always had a Transgo TF3 and there has never been a problem with it until this recent rebuild.

After the rebuild the 1-2 change was "binding" or "bogging". I thought I had the bands too tight so I re-adjusted them but still the same. Now after only 60 miles the rear clutch pack has chewed again!!! The pan was covered in thick black sludge from the frictions. I used Allomatic by the way.

I'm thinking out loud but welcome other suggestions, for a rear clutch pack to destroy itself so quickly the most likely answer would be a lack of line pressure? But where? Valve body?

Has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks in advance
K12

valve body and oil pump, thats driven by the t-verter, could also be the piston seal... if its bypassing your clutch packs would be slipping hella
