its going in a "65 dart" so i know i need it to be 1965 or a few other years earlier will work 1964 63? or so.
As long as its cable operated.
i was also told push button trannies will work ie: 63-64 and so on.

The 65 transmission is a one year only deal. It is cable operated like the earlier ones but I blieve it has a single cable instead of 2. The earlier pushbutton trannies are not a direct bolt-in replacement for a 65.

Actually, at least 63-65 trannies are essentially the same except for some minor valve body differences. All have 2 cables - one for park and one for shifting. The difference in '65 was the column shift instead of the pushbuttons. I would bet that 60-62 trannies would work too, but I'm no expert on those.

You might search the site to see what valve body diffs there may be. Pat Blais could likely sell you any minor parts needed. I have run 64 and 65 trannies in my 64 Dart with no trouble.

I stand (sit) corrected! That is contrary to what I had understood and am glad to know the straight scoop.
