You probably do have an induction-related problem, but you haven't given enough information for us to determine exactly what the problem(s) is/are. This what you describe can be caused by waterlogged or oxidised (old) gasoline, a faulty or clogged carburetor, vacuum leak(s), or even ignition-related issues that only behave like fuel-related ones.

How long has the car been sitting without running? How long since the carburetor was disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt?

Hey that may be it, but i just added about 5gal recently, i just rebuilt the carb so thats clean, im having issues with the manual choke though, cant seem to get it right, how far should it be closed? because at one time it was wide open and ran fine, now if it`s not set at one open small point it will either die-or-race the engine, also as far as the idle mixture screw goes which way should it be turned? because i just checked my plugs and there brand new autolites and they are black sooted, cold fouled {too rich}? also it`s been sitting for about 3 years, at that time it had a very hard knock coming from the engine, i assumed it was main bearings, stopped driving it, planned to rebuild the engine and eventually all went on the backburner, recently decided to get her going and these are my problems i dont have that knock anymore{???}-- and to me it seem like an adjustment problem somewhere, i just dont know where, if you guys have any ideas where to start i would appreciate it .

Start by dis-connecting the rubber fuel hose on the incoming side of the fuel pump, (tank side) connect a 3 foot piece of hose and lead that into a fresh can of fuel.

Next, check the initial timing and valve lash settings... then start the engine and check for vacuum leaks.
