Ok, so i got a 67 dodge dart that originaly came with the 225 slant six.. but Im going to do an engine swap. i picked up a good 318 for $100 bucks. now i am having a hard time finding a trans. for it. if i get a 727 would i have to make other modifications to the car? and what's the difference with the 904 and 727?

Your slant-6 to 318 engine swap idea will require, at minimum, the following:

-318 engine

-V8 transmission (904 or 727, but the bellhousing pattern is not the same as slant-6, so you've gotta have a V8 trans)

-V8 K-frame (not the same as slant-6 K-frame in '67 and later A-bodies). You may be able to find conversion engine mounts from Schumacher; not sure if this is a swap they support.

-22" wide radiator with V8 hose locations or custom hosework (19" slant-6 radiator won't cool the V8 adequately)

-Shorter throttle cable

Also keep in mind most slant-6 Darts came with 9" brakes and minimal-strength springs and torsion bars; if you're planning on steering this car better than sloppily, and stopping it with at least minimal safety, you'll need better brakes at least.

Are you sure you'll save money doing this engine swap...?

Schumacher does support this swap, but alot of other things will need to be addressed. Throttle linkage, kick down linkage, possible drive shaft differences, differences in radiator hose routing as well as the size as Dan mentioned. Also, the brakes and wheels on a slant are just not adequate even for a good slant, much less a 318. Dan mentioned the tranny, as the bolt pattern on both the bell housing and the flex plate are different.
You will need exhaust for a v-8. The fuel lines will be different.

There is alot to this. It will be a big project, and you want to make sure the car is worth all the work and money you will have in it. It really seems this move is out of step with the way things are generally going with gas prices through the roof, and everyone else down sizing car size and power for the sake of fuel efficiency. Is the slant worn out?

To answer your question, the 904 is lighter, and more efficient than a 727. But the 904 is more than adequate for your 318.

727 will require a shorter drive shaft too. :shock:

Other then all that already addressed, alot of people find that when you put in the 727 trans in you have to bang on the trans tunnell as well to get it to fit.
if your not building the 318 up all that much then the 904 will work just fine.But alot of people find a smallblock 727 and put it in just to be bulletproof. it adds a little moer weight but it is stronger.
727 are harder to get for smallblocks nowadays compared to the 904's
i have a rebuilt sb 727 if you did go that route.
