Hi, I'm new to this site. I've been tuning on my little brothers '63 4x4 powerwagon, (slantsix of course) trying to improve his mileage for him. 225, 4spd, 4.10 gears. I've recurved the distributer, set total timing, rebuilt and tuned the factory 1bbl carb with an LM-1 meter. At light cruise it's running at 15,15.5-1 A/F ratio. Anyone here have any other suggestions for improving the mileage? Dave

Other than tires and tire pressure, I don't think there's too much you can do. I would suggest weight shedding, but we're talking about a power wagon here! I'd suggest slowing down from 70 to 60mph, but I'd be suprised if you are doing much more than 50 already.

If that's the case, going to higher gears/taller tires is going to hurt your mileage anyway. The engine is already overworked!

You didn't mention what the truck is getting now, but I'd take a stab and say 10 city, 12 highway.

Any idea what that beast weights?

Seriously, what kind of mileage are you getting now? A change to a Super Six (2bbl) setup, an HEI upgrade, and a set of Dutra Duals would likely net some real and usable improvement.

If he picks a better tire size or change the rear ratio to 3.91 (that's a 'direct' 4 speed not an A-833 OD), that would help things a bit (if it's an NP435 4 speed, shedding that boat anchor for a lighter tranny would help your weight a bit, too...)

I've already told him to go junkyarding to pick up a supersix intake, carb and electronic ignition package. If it wasn't a 4x4 I'd have already changed gears for him. No idea what it weighs but it's a tank alright. He was getting 10mpg this last winter before I started tinkering with it. He told me after I did the distributer that it really picked it up and the mileage had gotten better but he hadn't gotten any figures on paper.
The truck in my signature is my '60 D-100 street-n-strip truck. Formerly powered by a E-85 440, it now sports a tunnelrammed 528 Hemi. Dave

Oh, that explains everything now. I thought you had some baldies & tranny fluid going on there for a stock slant to do that....or you had one hell of a head gasket problem!

Guilty, Like E-85 or not it's an interesting alternative to gasoline. For those that are tired of paying through the nose for race gas for their hotrods it makes perfect sense. My current motor in the truck runs on gasoline only because when I ordered custom pistons for it E-85 wasn't marketed yet.
