| Post subject: | Help picking a replacement engine? |
Hi folks, first post, first question. I'm looking for an engine to replace the one that the previous owner ran out of oil, causing excessive crankcase ventilation as a result of the softball sized hole in the side of the block. The truck has a 4 speed in it and I'm wondering if I get and engine with an automatic behind it, will it have the pilot bushing hole in the end of the crank? pls adv, tks, rjm |

Welcome on the board. What year and model is your truck, and whereabouts are you located? |

I'm in southern BC the engine was in a D300 approx 1976 vintage (never did get registration) I am putting the frame under a 63 D300 cab and a welding deck. no lean burn distributor and I had to remove the clutch and flywheel to get the bell housing off. I'm just worried I'll go to the trouble of buying a donor vehicle, pulling the engine out, and finding out its a no-go for the 4 speed. btw, trans looks to be a np435 tks, Bob |

It doesn't matter, usually the 'late' cranks like the 1976-1987 cast crank guys) are missing the finished bore... if you can pull the tranny and see it has a hole, you're in good shape... no pilot bushing? No problem... the 'old' way is to get a 'problem solver' bushing from Napa and seal it in with some high strength locktite... the 'new' and better way is to get the pilot bushing for a Late Dodge Dakota and just install in the 'crank pocket'... (but you have to have a 1968-1987 engine for it to fit)... Another thing is getting the proper flywheel for the engine too (cut off is 1967... so if using a 1960-1967 crank you need the early flywheel, 1968+ for the late engines, you can have the center hole honed out for an early flywheel to fit on the late crank, but the late flywheel will not have the shoulder to center it properly if using the late flywheel on the early crank...) -D.Idiot "But in any case it has to have a machined 'hole' for the input shaft snout" |

Welcome aboard, what part of B.C. are you in? I'm in Nelson and Sandy's in Burton (wherever that is) So you may not have to look too far. Plus our wreckers are still half full of slant anchors. Let us know what you need. |

good info, thanks. The flywheel/clutch assembly that came out looks pretty good, I was just going to reinstall it. I guess my terminology isnt up to date... I was just worried about getting an engine without a hole in the end of the crank Quote: Welcome aboard, what part of B.C. are you in? Nice truck! You may want to spend some time on www.car-part.com and see what you can find. It's a site that lets you search used auto parts clear across North America, and you can localise your search by provinc0e/state or region. The search function is based on direct interchangeability, i.e., bolt-in with no modifications or parts-swapping, so because the various-year slants can easily be interchanged with minor parts swapping, you'll increase your odds of finding a good engine if you will try multiple searches specifying different years. Try searching for '66, then for '73, then for '76, then for '86. |
