Post subject:  Brand new 225 short block

I have a new slant six short block. We bought it in 1994 and it has been sitting inside in a box. We paid $1300 for it. Any ideas what it is worth?

Any Idea what the casting numbers are? This might help us. If you happen to have a BH block you may get more interest.

"Brand new" = "Built by Chrysler and never installed in anything"? Or "Brand new" = "Remanufactured or rebuilt by somebody or some company and never yet reinstalled in anything"? It would also be helpful to know where you're located (I'm guessing somewhere in SC).

Do you have the paperwork on the engine and details on the work done?
Is is bored oversize?
What crank is in the engine, has it been ground undersize?
Is there a special cam in it?

IT IS BRAND NEW FROM MOPAR. PART # 4227917. I WILL GET NEXT DOOR IN A LITTLE WHILE AND GET THE CASTING # AND REPOST. I AM THE PARTRS MANAGER AT A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP. IT WAS ORDERED IN 1993 AND HAS BEEN IN OUR WAREHOUSE SINCE THEN. I AM NEAR MYRTLE BEACH SC. THANKS FOR THE REPLIES.

Welcome on the board. 4227 917 is a short engine, standard compression, 225, '81-'87 Dodge truck and van. So it's a cast-crank, hydraulic-lifter unit with the late (weak/gaspy) camshaft, though cams aren't too hard to swap. It should directly fit into '68-up slant-6 applications, as long as the correct oil pickup and pan are used.

Oh, one other thing: Could you please hit your "caps lock" key so that you're not posting in all-uppercase letters? Thanks.

Good info, that helps alot.
Based on the purchase dates, it sounds like you have one of the last replacement SL6 engines offered by Mopar.
It's going to be a cast crank engine, look for any block casting numbers or stamping on the deck surface.

I went and checked the casting # and found that the block was cracked at one of the bolt holes at the front. :(
The casting was 455910. I also noticed that all the pistons except one were stamped "C". The other one was stamped "D". Does that mean the on cylinder was a different size?

The "C" & "D" piston marking are for factory piston to cylinder fitting and not an oversize bore condition.

What bolt hole is cracked, one of the waterpump mounting bolts?

Looking at the block from the front there are 4 bolt holes. It is cracked between the top hole and the third hole. It is on the oppisite side of the water pump. I found some more #s on the block. The #s are

It's cracked in the timing chain cover area?

Sure it wouldnt be a casting/mold mark? if it IS a crack that took about 80-90% of its value away (whatever it would have otherwise been determined to be), i guess someone could use the head and rotating assy on another block.

It is definately not a casting mark. It is in the timing chain area.
