When accelerating and letting the transmission shift itself, my 1-2 shift is crisp and quick. Nice firm, positive transition.

When I manually shift it, the 1-2 transition is not positive. The car takes a brief pause, then slams into second. Violently. More of a bang than a shift. Not good.

I am assuming this is due to higher pressures through the valve body being piped to the clutch piston suddenly.

But why does it feel like the car stops pulling for that brief moment? Is it the clutch packs releasing, then slamming back in?

When you are in manually selected 1st the low/reverse band is applied. So if you go manual 1st to 2nd you have to release the low/reverse band before you get 2nd. The overlap is what causes the car to slow down. This is the main reason Torqueflites are quicker when they shift for themselves.

Makes sense. I guess I'll need to crank the Lokar up a bit more.

It's shifting at about 3200 WOT. I need about 4200.

Thanks Josh!

Breakaway isn't exactly first gear. . .

I'm going through my Valve Body logic diagrams again. I was thinking the Rear Servo was in when in Drive-Breakaway. Not so. It is pulled in with Lever select 1 or Reverse only.

OK, that explains a lot.

How do they get around this with a manual valve body setup? Or do they?

Unless I blip the throttle a bit at stop signs to force the issue, the transmission stays in second. Any ideas on what might cause this?

I dont know what causes that, but does it shift into 1st when it is warmed up? Mine wouldnt shift into 1st when it was cold, unless I "blipped" the throttle, or manually shifted. When it was warm, it shifted fine.

Then a week later, my trans goes out. Good Luck! :P
