Hi all.

I haven't really intoroduced myself yet here, so I guess I will now. The names Curt and I've had maybe 30 old mopars over the years, just about everything from a '70 top banana 4-speed Charger R/T to a Slant Six '82 Mirada. A few years back I had to sell off all of my older mopars and I've missed having them ever since. After about 4 years of not having one I finally broke down last week and bought a 1963 Valiant 200 4-door that I've known of for about a decade. The car belonged to a guy who worked at a local ford dealership (where I fist saw it in the late '90's). He recieved the car when his dad passed away and it sat for a few years. A few years ago they made him move it so he had the car hauled to a local shop to get it running. They cleaned the points, dumped some gas down the carb and it fired up...that was the last time it ran....2002 I believe.

I finally got the keys so I can start working on getting it running and ran into a few issues today with it that I hope you guys can help me with.

I've dealt with cars that have sat for a long time before and knew I'd have to drop the fuel tank and clean it out. Where the car is at now, I can't do that. so for the time being I'm running a fuel line from a gas can to the pump. I got a battery in the car and cranked it over a bit to no avail. It didn't seem like it was getting any fuel, so I pulled the line after the pump and sure enough it wasn't. When the shop got the car running before I know they didn't clean the tank or anything, so my bet is some junk got into the fuel pump and that's the end of that....I made the same mistake once before many moons ago.

So now I know I need to replace the pump, no big deal right? Well, as of yet I'm unsure of which /6 I have. I had assumed that the car had a 170 in it, but I got the casting number from the drivers side of the block today and from all the info I can find it appears to be a 225. The casting number is 220285-8. The engine is red and doesn't appear to ever be painted. My next problem is, is it the same pump for all /6's? My local parts store (Advance) doesn't have a listing for a fuel pump for a 225 in a '63 Valiant, but they do for the 170.

Also I noticed that the car is missing the throttle return spring..... I can see where it mounts to the throttle linkage, but where does the other end go, is there supposed to be a bracket on the intake? I'd also like to know where I can find a stock or close spring, I've had mixed luck with the "Help!" type springs in the past.

Sorry for the long post and I'm sorry if these are newb questions, this is really the first slant that I've worked on of the 3 I've owned previously, the others never needed anything! Everything else I've ever had was a small block or 383.....not quite the same.

Here's a pic of the engine if it helps, I have more if needed. Thanks for the help.

And a pic of the car....believe it or not the paint has shined up nice. It's nice to return a dead one to the road.

Welcome on the board! Your '63 looks like a good find.

Doesn't matter for this purpose; they all use the same fuel pump. Only differences are that some late-production ('80s) pumps have slightly different clocking of the inlet and outlet ports, and the '71 (plus '70s California) pumps have a fitting on the body for the hose leading from the carb bowl vent. You may want to go ahead and do the Fuel line mod while you're working with this part of the car.

Check the engine ID numbers stamped into the ledge at the top of the block, inboard of the coil/lower alternator bracket, below the frontmost spark plug.

Missing a digit before the dash. If it's actually 2202857-8, that's an RG engine (225).

170 & 225 were both painted red in American-built '63s.

On your '63, the throttle return spring is orientated vertically, and runs from the bellcrank on the throttle rod (just ahead of the firewall) to a small holed tab bolted to the block's bellhousing flange. Original springs are N/A; you'll have to work with what you can find on the open market.

Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread.

Thanks for the info Dan!

The number is actually 2202857-8, a bit of a typo there on my part. I tried to check in the other area (below the front plug) but everything on that side of the engine is so grimey from the leaky valve cover I can't see much, should make for fun swapping the fuel pump
