Hi,
Why are there 2 types of the one barrel aluminum intakes (at least it is what I have noticed). I have see the type that resembles the aluminum 2 barrel in runner design where #4 IS NOT symmetrical with #3 and then I have seen the type that resembles the cast iron intake where runner #4 IS symmetrical with runner #3...Thanks, nico

Offhand, I can think of five different kinds of factory aluminum 1bbl intake. They were produced using different techniques in different years.

My dad said the aluminum manifolds that looked like an "E" in the intake surface were absolute crap. They suffered from bad welds, created vacuum leaks, and caused the lean burn to go nuts.

I really like the 1980 or so truck/van one barrel. It looks just like the cast iron version. When painted you can't tell the difference. It warms up quick in the morning and the front leg to number one cylinder seems to stay nice and warm so the #1 plug runs the same color as the rest now.

Once the engine is shut off the heat soak on the carb is not as bad with the aluminum since it cools quicker compared to the cast iron so boiling over is not a problem. Hot start ups are much improved! I have done the gas line mod which helps and the aluminum manifold helps that much more. So with both mods you realize much better hot starting. :D
