Allright guys thanks for your input on my project. I'm getting the impression that there are alot more issues with doing a mild build-up(cam, intake, headers, and carb) on a re-built 170ci '64 Dart vs. doing the same to a 225 . I had no idea of the issues with the 170 headers. That's why I'm here...Thanks!!!
So, I'm looking into a 225 long-block instead. If I'm understanding correctly, the issues with putting in a 225 in place of a 170 are
1) oil pan and pick-up from the 170 needs to be salvaged and re-used.
2) Exhaust will need to be extended approx. 1" at the collector.
3) possibly need a bushing if the new motor is from a '68 or later.
Are there any other issues that I need to be aware of? I need to buy a long-block so I can get started, and I almost bought a 170 earlier this week, now I'm glad I didn't.
Again, Budget of approx. 3K, weekend cruiser with a decent power band, mileage not really an issue, hopefully no bone-yard parts, minimal machine work, bolt it up and put it in. That's what I'm shooting for (and I understand it wont necessarily be that simple, but that's the goal)
My thoughts on parts are intake and headers (Clifford? mainly because they're local) open to any reasonable suggestions, possibly shave the head a bit, The block and head will remain otherwise stock, mild cam etc. but I wont get into that stuff much 'til I have the motor on the stand.
Are there issues with the Clifford headers on an early A body with a 225? I'm open and appreciate any and all suggestions.
Are there bolt on kits for the throttle cable? I'm thinking a 2bbl but that's probably jumping the gun for now.
I know there's alot here, but I really want to have a plan before I get started... Thanks again for your help!!

Well, it's not that there are issues so much as it being that the 225 is such a significant and easy performance upgrade over the 170 that it makes sense to be near the top of the list of upgrades rather than near the bottom. The header issue is a non-issue if you use Dutra Duals instead.

Here again, put a lot of thought into the source of your engine before you buy it. The "reman" items over the parts store counter are usually a poor way to go. If I were shopping for a factory-built engine, I'd try to find a Jasper-branded unit. But y'know, if you're working to a budget, you could stretch it considerably and have more money left for stuff that makes you go faster and look cooler (and stop better, and see better, and steer better, etc.) by starting with a good used engine instead of a newly-built one. Can't remember where you're located, but depending on that it might be easier than you'd expect to track down a good used engine.

It's more that you need to use the oil pan and pickup appropriate to the vehicle. It goes by vehicle model and year, not by 170 vs. 225.

Yup. But since given your goals you should be looking into a new exhaust anyway, this shouldn't be a big issue.

definitely need a bushing if the new engine is a '68+ unit.

hopefully no bone-yard parts,
Difficult standard to meet with a '64 Dart!

Lots. Expect them not to fit without modifications. When asked, Clifford will cough, stare at the ceiling and mumble something dumb like "Engine placement is inconsistent in those cars".

The cable-throttle swap involves boneyard parts. A 2bbl is a great swap and you needn't necessarily hit the boneyard or go to cable throttle; see Parallel-mount 1bbl to 2bbl intake manifold conversion. Other good mods include the Fuel line mod and the HEI upgrade.
