Post subject:  Interior color

For a guy that has worked on dozens of MOPARS in the last couple years I am a little dumbfounded by this...

I am in the middle of restoring a '68 Coronet. The exterior is code Q (later known as B5, medium blue metallic), the vinyl interior is white, the top is black, the stripe is black, the dash is black, the carpet is black. The metal interior part of the door and rear seat area metal is blue :? :? IF, and this is a big IF, it was repainted by someone over the years they did one hell of a job. No signs of anything other than this color, one layer of primer, one thinning coat of paint. (unlike the 4 paint jobs that were done to the exterior  )

I think the metal parts should be black, with all the vinyl white. What do you guys remember color combos being?????

p.s. the owner believes it should be white throughout with exception to the dash and carpet.

Paint and interior got a lot easier to decode in '69 when the fender tag format was revised. There is a specific place on the '69+ tags for "upper door frame paint", which was same as exterior main body colour, same as exterior roof colour, or same as interior trim colour depending on the car. Don't know if '68 tags have a designator for upper door frame paint, but I would be utterly unsurprised to see the setup you describe (black interior but body-colour upper door frame paint) from the factory.

Dan is correct, there is a code for upper, etc... body coloring on the late 60's tags if I remember right...

Be lucky, my Hpak Feather Duster was optioned for B5 outer color, and the 'White/Black" interior color (so that meant: black carpet, black dashpad, white seats, white cardboard headliner, white door panels, black dash and steering wheel/column)... it looks a bit less garish as 'all black option'... (hides the dirt and scuffs better too...)

I have a 67 Barracuda with that style interior, and a want to paint the dash, door upper frame, etc. Do you use auto paint? Or is there a suitable rattle can paint that would look good.

There were often semi-gloss, satin, or matte-finish paints for interior parts like metal dashboards. These are usually found on page 2 or 3 of the relevant paint chip chart, which can be found at www.autocolorlibrary.com . You probably will not find it in ready-made rattle cans unless you want to pay too much, but taking the code to your local auto body and paint supply shop (use the yellow pages) will get you the right paint, and they can put it into spray cans for you if you like.

Personally, I have always wanted to see a 68 a-body with a mod top and upholstery, painted panther pink and sassy grass green, with some mood indigo and plum crazy thrown in fr good measure...

The code for 'Upper Door Frame Paint' is near the end of the second line from the bottom. It goes TRM PNT UBS. The U is the 'UDFP' code.
The choices for '68 were;
B - black
G - green
H - tan
J - gold
R - red
U - light blue
W - white
Y - mediun gold
Is the code under the M in TRM C (blue and white)?

I've been trying to talk the wife into a mod top for our dart. The furthest I have gotten is maybe lacing the top.

This info came a day late, but thanks for conferming. I got the trim tag from the owner (why do people hord things like this? seriously, they will give me their complete car and are worried about a tag that can be reproduced  ). Someone either painted the inners (which I doubt) or someone swapped the doors during one if it's paint jobs (very likely).
It's suppose to be white, so thats what it is going to be.
Thanks for all the ideas and info guys!!!
Chris
