Post subject:  170 slant six knocking... main bearings?

Ok so here's the scoop. I pulled the engine out of my 65 valiant becuase it was starting to leak oil all over the place. This was my first time delving this far into an engine, and with this being my first car I wanted to do all the work myself. So I get all the seals replaced including the rear main, without replacing any of the bearings (my dad told me it wouldn't be a big deal as long as I kept it clean... I might be regretting listening to him later). I had the head milled and hardened valve seats put in and cleaned up as much carbon as I could off of the pistons. Anyway, to make a long story shorter I got the engine back in and after a few long hours of adjusting and readjusting the distributor and rebuilt carb, i got her idling good.

And that's as far as I got with the good parts. I took her for a test drive down the road and back (about 2 miles) and noticed a very strange rattling/grinding/knocking sound at 1500 to 2000 rpm going a steady speed (the sound went away when I let off the gas or stepped on the gas petal a bit). The oil light also came on and wouldn't turn off. So I coasted home, let the car cool off for a couple hours and started her up again. Now the grinding/knocking sound is constant even at an idle, and it sounded like it was coming from the oil pump.

This morning I pulled the oil pump and what do you know, it was fine! It turns freely by hand with no binding or grinding and pumps the oil just fine. I'm thinking the pressure regulator probably needs replaced what with the oil light on, and I checked under the valve cover and the rocker arms weren't getting any oil. Would a faulty oil pressure regulator make a funny noise like that? or am I going to have to pull the engine again and replace the main bearings? I was hoping to keep this project low-budget if at all possible, but it seems that isn't the case anymore.

I've tried asking around locally, but everyone looks at me funny when I say I have a /6 and nobody seems to know anything about them.
