Drag racing you want some initial and no more than 30 total when off the line... daily driving should be some initial and no more than 30 mechanical... depending on compression you may need to have a heavy handed vacc. adv. to keep it from pinging (maybe no more than about 42-46 degrees at highway speeds...)

when i ran the mopar .528lift / 284deg dur cam, with 10.5/1 compression, 32degs timing worked the best with supreme gas.

Why no more than 30 mechanical? I've been experimenting with a bone stock motor and 35 mechanical, 49 total at 3000 rpm and so far no problems pinging , etc. I will say I ran some water thru the carb at high idle first to decarbonize the chamber and eliminate hot spots. And my cooling system is up to snuff. This is on pump gas 87 here in Florida. Took it out for a mileage test and pulled down 21 mpg in 90+ weather, doing 55 - 60 mph.

you can get away with those timing #`s with stock 7.5/1 compression!
