My brother's 83 225 powered van has a 2 1/2 inch exhaust line on it with a high flow catalytic converter and a high flow muffler. It is rather loud. What would be the cheapest/easiest way to quiet the exhaust without replacing the muffler? Resonator (cherry bomb)? Get a stupid fart tip?

Alternatively, what low restriction muffler is also low noise level?

Thanks!

"quiet it down without replacing the muffler" is not gonna happen satisfactorily; you need to replace the muffler. Don't know how cheap you need it to be, but I just put a Walker #50051 on my truck and am really pleased with it. It's a giant muffler — an OE replacement for '04-'05 year range Dodge Ram pickups — but there's room under trucks and vans for a big muffler, and "big" is what you want for high flow with low noise. You'll spend a hundred bucks on it, but it has a lifetime warranty that actually means something.

Thanks Dan! I will look around see if I can find a cheaper version of that sort of muffler.

Rock auto is selling Walker mufflers for 440s on eBay for $47 + shipping. I think i can do that. They are also selling the same muffler you just bought for $66 plus shipping.
