Is it in Park? This seems to be needed.

If you do have the pan off, use a screw driver, and compress the springy thing that holds the cable in place, and it will pop out.

If you use the early converter, make sure you put an adapter ring in the end of the crank.
Witg the pan off the trans, you should be able to see the spring around the cable bayonet, where it goes into the piece (link) that is screwed to the shift lever. Just take a small screwdriver and lift the end of the spring, where it fits into the groove in the "link", while holding the spring, just pull the cable out.

Post subject:  early converter

thanks for the help. the cables finally slid out. guess they been in there for 43 yrs!? i don't know what the adaptor would be to go on end of crank. flex bolts to crank, exactly what is it and where do you get it???i've had bunches of mopes since the mid 80's but never worked on any of the cable cars. new territory. thanks BILL
p.s. had a slant 6 four speed overdrive duster years ago that got 30 mpg on highway. so why are lighter more effecient? more expenive cars of today getting no better mileage than they do?????

The hole in the end of the crank of 68 and later engines is larger then the hole in the earlier cranks. If you use a early (67 down) trans/converter, on the late engine, the converter "nub" will not be supported by the crank. The adapter can be bought from Pat Blaise (Torqueflite Patty) or Wildcat motors. If you have access to a lathe, it is easy to make. just a ring that is the OD of the hole in the crank, the ID of the converter nub, and about 1/4 inch long.
PS: you have to use the late flex plate.
