Post subject:  Flywheels

I'm going to need a flywheel for the A833OD conversion, and I'm curious as to whether I'd be better off getting a used flywheel and having it resurfaced, or if I should get a brand new steel flywheel. I'm leaning towards the new flywheel, but if there's no chance of me grenading a used flywheel because of tiny cracks in a daily driver, I'll go that route.

Is there a new flywheel available for the slant, stock or otherwise? What would something like that cost?

I turned mine on a brake lathe, but then I had to grind some hot spots. It came out ok but not great. Took off 0.025~0.030" or so.

Where do you measure a flywheel? Don't they get "to thin" like a brake rotor? What is the spec on a slant flywheel?

Post subject:  How much?

Getting a used one you should be able to see problems right off the bat, and know if it's trashed... the price of junkyard unit and getting it milled shouldn't be too bad ($60 tops...), safety of a new unit would be good insurance as long as the flywheel didn't run you the cost of a new 4 barrel carburator...

I'm not sure about specs, but I know Mcleod sells a brand new steel flywheel for the slant for $325 through Summit or Jeg's (YIKES!). P/N 464001

Spaldings, the local junkyard here, quoted me $125 for a slant flywheel that they'd have to get from another yard. I suppose I could give Wildcat a call also.

You might try car-part.com looks like there are others in your state without having to get one shipped from WildCat (some in East Wenatchee, Port Angeles, etc... and some for $50... remember the flywheel is the same for trucks too....)
