64 Valiant 225 4dr torque gun happy mechanic strips lug bolts. wobbly wobbly wheel flanges lug seats on the rim so badly its preventing future use, or so i'm telling myself. was just gonna replace lug bolts, but using the whole scenario as the right time for a new set of wheels. i've got the stock spare full size rim, tire's not plug-able. rest of tires old old old and need replacing anyway after sitting out immobile for who knows how long before i got to the car. figure i'd take the opportunity for a little upgrade from the 13" stocks to something with a wider footprint that fills out the wells a little better, and just let the stock rims collect dust since i'll never bring myself to part with them. looking around, it seems there's limited options styling wise on the low end for classics. torque thrust and knock offs, rally style and knock offs, mostly just 5 spoke and seen on every single classic i've come across that's been fixed up. high end stuff is all blingy and style wise matches up better with trucks than cars. anybody found a cool set of wheels a little out of the ordinary they've been happy with? besides aesthetics, any one found any major issues with clearance on suspension parts and wheel wells with going to say a 15"- 17" rim, was thinking 8" wides but not stuck on it. |

The stock 14x5.5" SBP steelies with dog dish hubcaps. 195/70 14 or 205/70 14 tires |

I'm assuming you have the 4"x5 bolt pattern? Or have you upgraded to the 4.5"x5? If you still have the small bolt pattern, choices are limited. If you have the small bolt pattern try searching for rims with a 5 X 100 bolt pattern and you may find more options. Mostly modern stuff. Most VW's have a 5X100 pattern and there are some nice rims out there. Michael |

5X100mm WILL NOT FIT on the 5X4" bolt pattern. |

If you use 5x100mm rims on a 4"x5 bolt pattern car, please give me your license plate number. I'd like to avoid your car like the plague. "Close" is not good enough when it comes to mounting wheels on a vehicle. Anyone who does so endangers not only themselves, but everyone on the road around them.

i've got the original 13" steels. So i Need to be searching for 5x4" specifically? is there no direct correlation in the mm's setups? |

Nope. There are a few people who will tell you that 5x100mm is only a few millimeters off and "close enough", and how they've done so with no problems or know someone who has with no problems. But we're talking about WHEELS here and how they attach to the hubs and axles, one of the things on a car (along with brakes) that HAS to be exactly right. Otherwise it's a danger to everyone.Besides, although the choices are limited, there ARE several options in the 4" bolt pattern. I've stuck with the 4" pattern because I like all of the choices available. If none of them please you, switch to the 4.5" bolt pattern, and you'll have more choices than you could ever imagine. |

settled on a smaller tire, 180 70r13 for now. if anybody out there wants to get rid of a set of stock 14" 5x4" let me know whats up. still not entirely comfortable rolling around on what is today considered mostly a trailer rim and tire and will be looking around still for the future upgrade. thanks for all the input guys. |

Why 70-series? I ran 185-80R13's on 13-by-skinnies on my '64 until I changed to the larger bolt pattern, 15X7's, and 205-60R's.The shorter sidewalls and overall height might help a little in acceleration and handling, I suppose, but that's not a performance tire size!

nobody in the san diego area had a name brand 185 80 r 13 they could get me, and the Valiant is my daily driver so i'm not really interested in letting it sit around any longer than i have to. firestone and discount tire had no problems with availability as long as i switched to the 70. so 70 with a nationwide warranty it is for now. i'll get better when i get the bigger wheels and keep these as my backups now. TexasDart, you know if there'd be any issues with inside clearance on those 14's or if they're any wider than my 13's? i'm not that informed on width of wheels and bumping into suspension parts and what not for turning. |

I'm running 14" stock wheels on my 65 Dart without any problems on the front and rear. I'll have to check out what size tires I am running on it. |

Need more specifics. What size wheels do you have or want to use? Width/diameter? FYI, traction is often as much about the tire compound as the overall width...
