Ok i'm in the middle of gettin rid of my old gear box and putting in a power steering box. Got the pump in place and ready but ran into a major problem when installing the new power steering box. I got it bolted up and ready to hook up. When trying to line up the pitman arm to the drag link it was way off.The drag link is hitting the cross member under the engine. Also noticed that the steering shaft is about and inch past the steering disc conection. Am I way over my head or is there something I missed? This is my first time working on anything like this so bare with me here. |

ok guys never mind the clearance issue... after a lil more brain storming managed to figure out the right sequence to get the pitman arm and drag link happy. But I still have the steering shaft problem where its still about and inch to long. I notice there is a spring around the steering shaft where it enters the bay is this springloaded? |

You need the shorter steering column (or at least the shaft) from a power steering truck. |

Van and truck stuff does Not interchange. B vans use passenger car steering boxes. Truck boxes are different and 4x4 boxes are different still. |

My bad...all I read was 'dodge 150 custom' in the signature and assumed (wishful thinking) it was a B instead of a D. ![]() |

Post subject: | throw away the steering shaft |
I wouldn't even bother with the stock steering shaft--Borgeson makes a work of art replacement for Dodge pickup trucks. It is tight, and bullet proof. It isn't cheap, but if you ask me steering is a desirable feature. Go to this link to read about it: http://ww2.borgeson.com/TRUCKS/DODGE.html FYI, the Borgeson shaft is adjustable for length...Just throw out the stock Dodge shaft, although they can be rebuilt they turn to crap in short order. |

Well had a great time at the pick-n-pull here...I was very surprised to see many dodge trucks and powerrams with the slant six in them. Last time I went most of them just had the 318's and so on. I even got lucky to find the brackets for the power steering pump. I was gettin ready to fab up my own but these will do much better. I found a steering shaft that was in good shape. I got them in the truck as soon as I got home. The box was nice and tight with no play. I didn't have the pump hooked up yet because i'm waiting on a new high pressure hose. I wanted to kill my self the other day because I striped the drop steering bar shaft. I got ahead of myself and couldn't get the drop bar off, had to remove it because it was on the wrong way for some reason. So being my usual stupid self I pulled out the sledge hammer after failing with the puller I was using. After beating the crap out of the shaft I realized what I did. I was able to get the nut part way on but that was it and didn't want to strip the rest of it. I nearly cried when my friend told me I could have taken it to auto zone and they would have pulled it off for me free!!! But I think I am going to replace it any way cause I found it was full of water and not to mention I bought it used. So I really don't know what i'm dealing with so figured I would use it as a core to exchange for a rebuilt one that I know works. |

BTW...didn't the 'custom' term only go for the d150 models? My truck only says 'custom 150' and some times thats the way I find it in the parts catalog online. ![]() ![]() |

Post subject: | FYI on hoses |
Just so you know your neighborhood Chrysler dealer still stocks power steering hoses for your truck. You can usually find the high pressure hose at a parts store but the low pressure return might not be carried (i.e the steel tube and fitting). I just replaced my manual box with power steering--I love it. One thing I've noticed is that there is very little adjustment room to tighten the belt...I am looking at a using slightly shorter belt perhaps...something to watch/think about. |

I didn't get the power steering pump setup yet but i've got all the brakets for it. What do you mean theres little adjustment room? Oh and I was thinking about that return hose because I also noticed it had different fittings and all. I was told I could just use like barb fittings and just run the line to the pump is that true? I've never done this before so would appreciate all the input. Thanks!

My 1979 D-100 2wd 225.Has CUSTOM nameplates on the front fenders. So,it is not only d-150's.I think "custom" is a trim level. Mine is a bare bones truck with few options. My $.02 |

Thats exactly the same as my truck...only thing it had was a radio and heater. Now i'm adding all the these things to it so I can make it a great daily driver. Gets hot here in south texas. It wasn't to bad today got a lil over a 100.

ok guys I've got most of what I need to finish this out. I'm having a very hard time trying to understand how the belts run. My book doesn't have a diagram. The power steering pump I assumes runs off the back groove of the crank pulley? My problems is the atlernator and fan/pump are running off the back groove crank pully. But the power steering pump also lines up with that same groove. I was gettin ready to get a custom belt to run the alternator off the front groove and run another custom belt to run the fan and power steering pump off the back groove. Anyone got some pics or something? ![]() ![]() |
