I wanted to pick up a second resistor for a back up to keep Murphy at bay, and there are several to chose from with differing resistances. Which one do I need? I don't know the year of the electronic ignition module on the 67 Dart. It is red with the following numbers on the pig tail that connects the unit to the coil: P3696 152 and 23489 no other ID on the unit; I can not see any numbers on the coil; the existing resistor has D. Pat. No. 254186 imprinted on it, and is filled. I tried to get a reading of the resistance with a VOM, but come up with 1 ohm.... |

Does your ignition control box have four pins or five? If the control box has five pins, you need the 4-pin ballast resistor, Standard-BlueStreak #RU-12. If the control box has four pins, you need the 2-pin ballast resistor, Standard-BlueStreak #RU-4. |

Thanks Dan Oddly, the control box has five wires only two of which are used. The existing resistor presently in use has just two terminals. NAPA had two different resistors in stock both with two pins but different resistances. I don't recall the exact ohm rating of each, but say 1.2 ohm & 1.8 ohms. They may have been universal application. I'll give NAPA the Blue Streak # RU4 to match to. |

You should have a minimum of 4 wires in use: 1) power with key on/first leg of the ballast resistor 2) wire to the coil 3&4) two signal wires from the distributor to tell the box when to fire off the coil.... 5) optional other side/start side of the resistor... -D.Idiot |

That is correct. I was not clear previously. My existing resistor has just two male blades, and two wires of the five on the electronic ignition box are used as you described DI. |

my RU4 died on me after a very short time. I used the 4 wire ignition control box, but have an msd blaster II coil. What's the proper 2 pin ballast resistor to use for this setup? |

Jester, I believe this is the MSD Blaster 2 coil & resistor I have installed; its been a while, and I don’t see it listed in my notes.... The coil & resistor came as a set, and allows for a little higher voltage to the coil, than the standard resistor. |

Thanks! I've seen them sold seperately for about 8 bucks. I have two RU4's and a 1.2 Ohm ordered from somewhere else. One of the RU4's failed, and the 1.2 Ohm one is on the car now. The other RU4 works fine for now. The RU4's have open backs and the 1.2ohm resistor has a filled in back. Perhaps the dead one got water in there at some point... It has only been installed for a year, and barely driven. tested the dead resistor. it has infinite resistance, not sure why, as it still looks new front and back. |
