Post subject:  Head shaving ?

Hello, I am in the process of rebuilding a 66 225. The motor is all original with the exception of elect dist and a super six setup. The rebuild will be all stock internally. I would like to shave the head a small amt to slightly increase c/r and ensure a good flat surface. What would be an amount recommended to remove. Motor has flat top pistons and I believe stock c/r is about 8.25 to 1. would like to get near 9. is this possible by shaving head and by what amt? Also this next question should bring some laughs  . I cannot get the PCV valve out of stock valve cover. I do not want to damage cover. is there a trick to this? Thanks for help. Ed

What is the entended purpose of the vehicle? Remember the 8.5 cr is maybe and the factory head gasket is.020 with aftermarket gaskets about .045. If it were me I would take at least .080 off.

Hi Frank, The Dart will be a cruiser. We are keeping her all original, with exception of super six and dist, no need for big increase in power just want a little more than stock. Thanks, Ed

I took off a total of .090 between the block and the head which has provided good power (torque) and mileage and no ping on regular gas. :D
.030 came off the block and .060 off the head and includes a little port work.

On a cruiser i would just clean it up and go and extra .025 to account for the extra head gasket thickness. For a little extra stock pep .100 is not out of line and with good tune and some finess (recurved dizzy and carb freshening/ tuning) it will really come alive. I believe the super 6 set up would enjoy .100 myself and I will be doing that very mod to my wifes 74 Duster soon.

You might want to review some of the old posts (this subject comes up very often)... you will need to check your cylinder depth from the top of the mounting surface to the surface of the cylinder face (that gets your deck height)... then you have to figure out your gasket volume (using the Felpro one right?), then you will want to take a peice of acrylic plastic, drill a couple of holes in it, get a syringe from a pet store or feed store (the big 60cc catheter type)... and see how many cc's your heads are... by just cleaning .100 off the top you're taking a crap shoot as to whether you get 8.5-9.5:1 compression (or more or less)... each 'era' has it's own chamber sizes and the factory was pretty wild on variation of the deck height.... if you measure it then you 'know' what you have... which will be better than doing it and then posting back... "guys I knocked .100 off the top and now it pings all the time..."

Get some meausrements, come back and let us know... then we can help you get it 'right' where you want it...
