| Post subject: | Which cap and rotor for 318? |
I bought a set for my '72 318 Calif car w/electronic ignition at one of the chains and the cap simply does not fit. I'm told that Standard Blue Streak is the one, but I see a couple of part #s. Anybody know which p/n suffix or p/n is the good one with brass contacts etc.?Thanks! |

Get a Standard BlueStreak cap #CH-409X. For the rotor, if you have the time to spare, it will be worth your hassle to get your local NAPA store to special-order an Echlin #MO-3000 rotor for you. Make sure the one you get is made out of tan plastic. If they try to palm off a white one on you, just say "no"; that's a misboxed MO-13 and you won't accept it. |

I avoid the Echlin caps; they have a yucky history of being ground off-centre. Again, make sure you get an actual MO-3000, not a misboxed MO-13. See pictures here. |

THanks, and I'm going over to NAPA and order the rotor tomorrow. We'll see what turns up...There's a big Schucks nearby, so I'll order on-line for store pickup for the cap. Now for some Magnecore cables. Removing cables from the plugs and looms always worries me. I have a Lisle half-loop puller for the plugs, but the looms...how to do it so I don't damage the cable or is that even a worry? Maybe hook a finger either side of the notch and just pull straight out (pull perpendicular to the cable) ? |

Kind of a hassle getting the Echlin M 03000 rotor at NAPA. Called them and talked them through finding the item in their catalogue. They had to order it from Portland. Went in to the store couple of days later and the kid who waited on me looked through his stuff and coudn't find the part # and just blew me off. I was about to say pees-on-it an leave, but another more responsible kid took over, and I talked him through finding it in his parts catalogue. Sure enough it was sitting on the shelf a couple of steps from the counter. Guess kids see an old geezer and figure he's senile if he's still driving a '72 Plymouth..."what kind of car is it; a Fury or something?" Guess I'll have to print a copy off the net and take with me next time. Do much of my shopping online. Paying shipping is better than fighting trafficng, standing in line, and dealing with morons in stores. Only drawback is returns |

Borg Warner is another good brand for ignition components, IMO. I work at an O'Reilly Auto Parts store, and there is a good chance we would have the cap and rotor in stock for you. I like it when middle aged guys (like me  ) pull up in an old car. I'm more familiar with old Mopars than the newer stuff.I will say that I know that the experience of going to an auto parts store can be frustrating.

No kidding... last weekend I did a brake job on my Jeep. The first two auto parts stores I went to said, "No, we don't turn rotors anymore." WTF?!?!? A parts store that doesn't turn rotors? I never thought I'd live to see that I like it when middle aged guys (like me ) pull up in an old car. I'm more familiar with old Mopars than the newer stuff.I will say that I know that the experience of going to an auto parts store can be frustrating. Third store still turned rotors (and more importantly had a guy who knew how to do it right). Yes, it was an O'Reilly... but I gotta say they were a WHOLE lot better back when they were HiLo auto parts before the O'Reilly merger. What really shocked me was the second store I went to- it was a NAPA. I expected better of them. |

Yeah, we still turn rotors. The price is $15 dollars per rotor, which is almost as much as the cheap brand of rotors. I know that auto parts stores ain't what they used to be, and this is not my dream job. However, nowadays the focus is on newer cars, not so much the cars that we drive. A lot of the younger guys who work there are into the newer import stuff. |

NAPA aren't what they used to be. More and more, they're just another AutoZone. Spend some time (if you can stomach it) on their website. Take a look at the crap they're offering these days.

Take a look at the crap they're offering these days.The real kicker was when I asked about replacement rotors, asked for their "premium" model instead of the entry, and the guy brought out a set of $50/each rotors and the damn boxes STILL were stamped "made in China." No thanks.... that's when I headed down the road to O'Reilly. |
