 Post subject: Question For Doc
PostPosted: Mon Dec 03, 2001 9:17 am
I attempted to fire up my Hi Pro 225 (Bored 30 over,9.9 to 1 compression, oversized valves, ported & polished heads,Hughes cam,MP Elex Ignition, MP HV Oil Pump,Carter 4bbl,Headers, etc)but not getting oil pressure. Ran 1-1 1/2 minutes on first firing. Screwed filter off and no oil in it. After tinkering a bit fired up again and ran about 3 minutes - No oil pressure! Screwed off filter and about a cup of oil came out. Have MP pump and put in new pickup tube to specs. No leaks and all passages were checked and cleaned. Galley plugs are in.Afraid to restart without oil pressure. Pump, galley and filter were filled with oil during assembly. Oil never came up to rockers. What do you suggest????????? I suspect most of the assembly lube is gone. Don't want to wear down cam lobes or bearing failure, and really dont want to pull out and disassemble engine. Engine ran good - No knocks or rattles! Need HELP!

This is a serious problem....did you "pack" the pump with vasoline or pour a lot of oil into the filter to get the pump to prime?
I am hoping the pump just needs to be primed but before doing another start-up, pull the distributor out and take a look at the cam's drive gear. With a flashlight you will see both gears. (the oil pump drive gear is below the cam gear) Crank the engine a few short times and watch to see if everything is spinning straight and looks OK. (no broken teeth)

Problems you will not see is if the oil pump gear is spinning on the pump rotor shaft. (unlikely) or if the front main galley plug is not there. (you sound confidant that both plugs are installed)
Pour a bunch of oil into the filter and into the holes of the oil pump where the filter screws-on and give it another try. I would pour some extra oil over the rocker arms, pushrods, lifters before doing the next restart. There is not much to the SL6 oiling system so we will get to the cause of this problem pretty quick.

There is some additional info that comes-up when you search the site for " oil pump prime " (all), here is one of the messages.
