I am sure I stashed several sets of excellent ones. If you can stand used, sent to you free for postage. And some pushrods too if you want em but I always got new rods from Melling.

The price fluctuates depending on supply... go back to 6-7 years ago and the price is pretty spot on... back in 2000-2001 Fed Mog was changing and had stopped making lifters, even the chevy crowd was bellyaching at that time because supplies were short... (so when prices are down I squirrel away a rainy day set...)

3 or 4 years ago, a gallon of gas cost about 1/3 what it does now, too. :-( I think you might be misremembering a little; seems to me it's been a few decades since one of these lifters cost $1.58 to $2.42 apiece (your $19 to $29 figure).

Watch the swap meets. A while back I bought 2 sets of lifters for $45. NIB Mopar too.

Many automotive machine shops and cam grinders can resurface used lifters for a few $$ each. I do this every so-often and get a better price when I do 3 or 4 sets at once.
A reground cam used with a set of resurfaced lifters and a milled cylinder head keeps the valve geometry surprising close to the factory's lay-out.
