What are some easy and cheap performance up-grades for my 225 slant six in a 1970 Plymouth Valiant

-A good tune-up including a valve lash adjustment.
-Bigger exhaust & a free flowing muffler.
-Distributor recurving to match your driving conditions.
-Anti-sway bars and good shocks.

You should do a search. This topic has been discussed many times. But a good upgrade would be a super six.

Things you can do on your own with our help: Go to your local wreckers and pull off a 2 barrel intake, carb, linkage, and air cleaner assembly off of a 1977-1980 super six (volare/aspen). take the carb to a shop and get it rebuilt (possibly fitted with larger nozzles?).

You could also try to do some do-it-yourself bowl porting (after doing some research) on some heads until you get a good consistent one you can use (dont do anything crazy, just polish the bowls with a die grinder. NOT A DREMEL).

Also look up the GM HEI electronic distributer conversion (with MSD blaster-2 coil that puts out around 45,000 volts) and see if you feel like spending about 50 bucks and 2 hours rigging it together. This allows you to increase your plug gap about .1 thou i believe and helps mileage as well as high rpm performance.

The other stuff can be a little more labor intensive such as getting a set of headers, larger pipe, and free flowing mufflers.. installing a high lift cam (dont forget to shim the rockers/buy shorter push rods).. and modifying your oil pan to sit lower.

Stuff you need a machine shop for: Plaining the head .09 is a good idea (double check the numbers), get the crank shot peened (its already forged and probably never going to give you trouble), and install good forged rods/pistons. I would also get it bored at least .30 to help get things straight again (slant sixes like to get funky in the bore consistency), maybe get the main journal bearing housing thingys (forgot what their called lol) machined to help reduce wobble.. AND ALWAYS get your rods, pistons, and crank balanced or else you might feel disappointed after all your work when she likes to vibrate a little.

The best thing to do is just to read everything in sight and make your own decisions based on what you feel is right, affordable, and reasonable. I'm not going to lie, the slant six can be a bit expensive to work on unless you know how to bargain hunt and not break things [/u]
