I have changed starters on a 1965 Valiant and the new one has an integrated solenoid. I tried putting the two solenoid lines together and put them on the same terminal but this did not work. Then I tried putting one on a bolt on the starter and one on the solenoid terminal. The starter spins but does not engage. Are there any suggestions? Thanks |

You're running into a difference between the Canadian and American '65 Valiants. First we'd better check to make sure the starter you got is actually going to work on your Canadian '65, instead of just grinding and chewing up the ring gear. I'm guessing you bought the replacement starter at a parts store...am I right? Do you have a part number for the replacement starter you were given? See this post for detailed info on the Canadian-spec starters. Do you still have your original starter you removed, or did you hand it in for a "core"? |

I still have the original starter and will get the number off it I bought the starter in Canada so I assumed that it was for a Canadian car. That is something that I will ask the parts store tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions. |

I was actually asking about any numbers on the replacement starter you bought; I know what the numbers are on your original starter. Keep that original starter — your best way forward is likely going to be taking it to a good auto electrical rebuilder and having it bench-rebuilt. In 1965, both American-made and Canadian-made Valiants were sold in Canada on account of a strike at Chrysler Canada. So it's not surprising that forty-three years later, you'd stand a good chance of getting the wrong starter by walking into a parts store. |

Thanks for the info. I will take it to a rebuilder. The more I thought about it that is really be best solution. The information on the original starter is: S5023 Serial # s-50230022. I will check out the other starter and post the information from that. |

H'mmm. S-5023 and that long serial number doesn't match up with any I've seen. The original starter on your '65, if your '65 is a Canadian-built car, would have a metal tag on it that says "Auto-Lite" and the model number would be MDT-6017. Some photos of the starter you removed would help ID it positively. |
