Post subject:  '64 Dart Pushbutton Shifter - Disassembly

Hi everyone, been a while since my last post, but here I am again.

Well, the original pushbutton shifter in my 64 Dart is having some troubles and I have a spare unit with a different problem. I'd like to take both units apart as completely as I can and swap parts around to make one good unit (with some left over parts just in case).

Has anybody attempted or tried to tear down an old pushbutton shifter unit, or know of a good article that specifically covers this topic?

Thanks for the Help!

H'mm. There shouldn't be a need to tear down either shifter to the bare bits. What (specifically) are the problems with both buttonboxes?

Well, technically, both "work." Both will shifter gears and will technically retain gear selection after pushing a button, but some of the action of the buttons is rough, I've tried lubrication (WD-40, Lithium Grease, etc.) but the main issue is that with certain gears, after you push the button to select a gear the button won't stay depressed and in certain cases do to missing sections of metal from some of the armature linkages, certain gear selections are impossible if tried from other selected gears (going from one Drive selection to another Drive selection).

So mainly I need to replace the armatures of some of these gears (I say armature, I mean that metal linkage that is connected to the plastic buttons that you actually get to push).

Mm. That does sound like you'll be doing some rather complete disassembly. This is pretty much a matter of examining it and figuring it out on your own; the buttonbox was never regarded or intended as a rebuildable item. It was designed and built to last the life of the car...it's just that these cars are now well past their intended lifespans!

Silicone spray is an excellent choice for lubrication once you get everything all put back together. WD-40 is never a very good choice for lubricating anything.

Do take pictures of your rebuild work and show us the process you follow, will you?

Sure thing, I'll be sure to take some nice pics as I go along. I'll try to get my results posted oor at least my progress updated as I go along.

I will sell a good used push button box for $80.00
Now the question becomes: "how fast do you work and what's your time worth?"

How fast do I work. Not to be offensive but, I'm actually already done.

Its honestly not that hard to take these suckers apart. As long as you don't mind grinding slightly on one particular part of the button box.

I should have a tutorial or at least photos available soon.
