Post subject:  Marchal Equillux Headlights - paging SSDan

I've run across a pair of 7 inch Marchal CE Equillux headlights and was told they might have been used on Ferraris, Lamborginis, etc. They have replaceable H4 bulbs. As good or better, than the current lighting options? Reason I ask is I found and installed a set of Marchals (model # Unknown) and installed them on a VW bus in 78 and the difference at night was, well like night and day. They were labeled off-road only but what the hey - I wanted to be able to see at night.

"Equilux" was a name applied by Marchal to a large variety of headlamps, and even if we just narrow it down to 7" round units, there are still at least a dozen varieties over the years. These are headlamps designed before the halogen H4 bulb came along; most of them take not an H4 but its predecessor, the plain tungsten R2. Filament placement and essential geometry is identical between R2 and H4 burners, but the base is different; H4 burners on R2 bases are available. Ferrari did use a lot of Marchal lamps; I can comment more specifically on what you found if you'll show me some good, clear pictures. Marchal made very few bad lamps; most of their stuff was quite excellent, but in many cases the later optics (designed around a halogen source) are better. Not all cases, though, so show and tell...what've you got, what kind of condition are they in, etc?

And yes, good European-code headlamps do tend to work a lot better than the DOT units that'll fit our cars, but it's definitely not the case that any E-code headlamp is better than any DOT headlamp.
