Post subject:  LBP question

Were there ever LBP 10" front drum brakes on a-bodies? If so, will the hubs fit the 10" drum brake spindles on my 1970 Dart? That would get me the same bolt pattern front and back without having to spent mucho $$ on a conversion kit. Stock LBP disc parts are like hen's teeth around here. Believe me, I've been looking.

Nat,

You can convert to LBP disc brakes by using spindles from F/M/J bodies as well as late A and E bodies, or even late B bodies. All the other parts including the upper control arms you can buy new if you can't find good used stuff.

I believe the '73 and newer 10" drum spindle would allow you to use a LBP 10" B-body front drum and hub, but not the '72 and older spindle.

I'm waiting for replies from two people. One with a '75 Duster which he says has drums up front and one with a '73 Dart Sport - front end as yet undetermined. If the fellow with the Duster winds up being the winner, what should I nab off his car? UCAs and spindles? Maybe LCAs and swaybar (I hope).... Anything I've missed?

From the Duster I would grab the upper control arms and spindles at a minimum. If the lower ball joints are good I'd grab those too. Might as well have the backing plates if they are free. They should be the same as yours, but I can't say for certain. The lower control arms would be cool if they have sway bar tabs, but the '75 sway bar goes through the K-member which won't fit a '72 and earlier car without changing the K-member. My '72 Dart has the newer K-member with the through mounted sway bar, spool type motor mounts and later drag link. I have the same parts for my '67 Valiant, but they haven't been installed yet.

I just got all my parts to swap to 11 3/4" discs.Also if you get disc brake spindles I could sell you my 10 3/4" set-up for a fair price(rotors,bearings,calipers,caliper adapters,hoses,etc)let me know.

It's not the brake parts per se that I'm having trouble finding, it's the upper control arms and spindles I'm having difficulty finding...... At a midway reasonable price, that is. $500 is the best price I've been given for those parts alone. They crush nearly everything 1980 and older around these parts.

I do have the big bj upper control arms as well with about 2000 miles on the ball joints as I said all you would need is spindles as I do not have an extra set.I would be willing sell it all for $350.00.

Upper control arms,newer big ball joints(Moog)poly bushings(energy)
10 3/4" rotors
inner & outer bearings
caliper adapters
calipers & pads
flex hoses

So you would need spindles & lower ball joints,& of coarse a disc brake master cylinder.

You will have a choice about whether you mount the spindles so the calipers are on the back, or on the front, depending on which side you put each spindle on. In my opinion, as I have tried it both ways, you will have less trouble with after market sway bar mounts if you put the calipers on the rear side of the spindel. Everything is symetrical, and can be swapped side for side. Doing so moves the caliper adapter from the front to the back, or the other way around. I have seen stock set ups of various Mopars set up both ways.

I think the later K member, with the through-the-frame sway bar offers more clearance, but with your earlier K member, there is always a space problem when you put the calipers on the front side. The problem is, you might not see the crunch when the car is sitting level, but when you jack up the front end, and the lower control arms come down, they also move inward, and everything gets tighter, and closer together. I have fussed with these older 67-72 A body front end suspension parts and after market sway bars, disk conversion, etc. for years, and am just passing on experience to help you avoid mis-steps.

With all the replys, I have yet to see an answer to the original question. As far as I know, the "A" bodies never had large bolt pattern front drum brakes (9 or 10 inch). I could be wrong, but that was my understanding.
