previously happened on a bad alternator, checked and it's fine.

replaced ballast resistor, voltage regulator

still same problem. blows fuse as soon as you hook up the negative to the battery.

car was wired less than a year ago, nothing's been changed since and was issue free.

no ignition on, keys in pocket.

Argh. I was just saying yesterday that these "universal" aftermarket wiring "solutions" (e.g. from Painless) make the hair on the back of my neck stand up and do the creepy-crawly. Stuff like this phantom shorting happens and because the wiring is poorly documented and poorly supported, you're left totally on your own. :-(

You'll have to start by pulling all of the individual-circuit fuses and putting them back one at a time to see if the main fuse blows. If not, then you'll have to disconnect all the feeds between the main fuse and where it branches, and reconnect them one at a time until the fuse blows.

short between starter relay and maxi fuse. i placed the wire in a bad place and it was getting friction that i didn't notice.

been a long week, just needed a chance to get my brain unscrambled and follow down the lines.

as a side note, the painless kit was nothing but good to me. managed to rewire a whole car with little previous experience, and so far any problems i've encountered ended up being installer error, i.e. me.

made a poor connection here, bad placement there. was part of the learning curve. haven't had any problems with the kit itself and been running almost a year now.

their customer service was spot on too. don't regret the kit one bit.
