Does anyone know offhand the maximum exhaust manifold temperature one can expect for a /6 & V8? |

Turbo diesels need to stay under 1000°F EGT, a slant is probably mid to upper 800s for a stocker. How hot that makes the manifold I don't know. |

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature. We need SlantValiant to come answer this question. I very seriously doubt you're going to see anywhere near 800°F exhaust manifold temperature. We really need SlantValiant for a definitive answer. |

Thanks; when you said that it was obvious. The reason I ask is that my inexpesive 500F IR thermometer saturated when I tried it on my manifold and I'd like to know what how high I may need to go. |

Thanks again. I'm not trying to get absolute EGT temps, I'm just looking for cylinder-to-cylinder variations that may tell me something about my fuel distribution being off. There's a 1000F IR thermometer on sale locally through Friday I'm considering, but if I need a higher temp one I'll pass on that one and look for a higher rated model. |

Thanks again for your help. I searched the literature and found that while ~700C (~1300F) at the outside surface of a cast iron exhaust manifold may be typical under high power, it ought to be much lower at idle. I went out with a K-type thermocouple this morning and measured about 540F at warm idle on my '80 L6 Ford (my Mopar isn't ready right now), so a 1000F IR thermometer ought to be just fine and my 500F model just fell a little short. |
