I'm in the middle of a adding a turbo off a 90 probe to my 225. Supposedly the turbo was good when it came off the car and sat for a year in a box. When i got it bolted onto the car and plumbed though it refuses to build boost. no vacuum leaks in the system that I know of and I've noticed some curious blue smoke that wasn't there before the turbo addition. Does the turbo just need rebuilt or am i wasting my time with it? However, excluding the smoke, the car does run stronger now.

Where are you trying to measure boost ?

If its smoking it just means the seals are bad, or you dont have the oil return line worke dout right. The return line has to be of th eright size (big enough) and also has to be going down hill at every piont and no 90 degree fittings, or restricted fittings can be used.

Is the turbo setting level ? Is the oil line going in, and the return line going out 100% vertical.

Where does the oil return line go back into the engine ? IT must be above any oil level and if it was in a place that has a lot of windage these can cause problems also.

If the car runs stronger, it must be making boost. But if its making boost it will run a lot stronger. The waste gate not shutting all the way can cause no boost, or a bad acuator. No boost is something a turbo hardly ever does because of problems with itself.. The only way would be if the shaft was locked up, or a wheel was eat up pretty bad.

Exhaust leaks will cause low boost adn very slow spool.

i'm measuring boost at the intake. And now that you mention the oil return line problem that sounds like the cause of the smoking problem. The shaft is not locked up it spins freely by hand without any interference. However, the oil lines are not vertical they are going horizontal. I was able to get the smoking to stop by moving the return feed lower in the pan. I'll check for the exhaust leaks and get back with more information.

Check you waste gate real good then. It may not be holding shut which will cause it to not reach any boost. Even if the turbo is not doing as good as it could, it should still make some boost. The waste gate not holding shut is about the only think that could do it if the turbo has wheels, and there is not a hugh leak in the system somewhere.

Unbolt the watse gate accuator and see how far you have to pull the waste gate arm to get it closed. Then compair to see if the accuator can pull it that far closed.

You should have to pull out on the waste gate accuator arm to get it to reach the waste gate level it hooks to. There will be a very strong spring pressure on this arm you have to over come to get it on the lever if its bolted on right.

I hope this makes sense, its late and I am very sleepy.

Well I got into the car and I discovered a bad exhaust leak between the turbo and the manifold. The current problemn though is that it leans out and dies under accereation now. but it does start to build pressure right before it dies. I've tried boost referencing the float bowls by running a hose from the intake to the float bowls by way of the float bowl vent and the vacuum tree. this seems to help some but the system is nowhere near right yet. What else do i need to do to make it flow properly. I'm using the mechanical pump still and a Carter BBD. I've heard talk about using a Holley 500 and modifying it to run in a blowthrough application. And some of the local guys who supercharge said that i would need an electric fuel pump with a referenced presure regulator.

You did boost reference the fuel pump, right?

What's your fuel pressure doing under boost?

The way you ran the pressure line to the carb explains the engine dying when boost begins. Right now you are blowing the fuel out of the carb bowl with no way to replenish the fuel. You need to send a dedicated 1/8"vacuum line from the pressurized side between your turbo and intake to THE VENT HOLE OF YOUR FUEL PUMP. This is the way Ford and Studebaker did it with the Paxton superchargers back in thew 50s and 60s. Tap in a 1/8" vacuum fitting to the fuel pump vent hole. You amy still need some tuning after you get the plumbing part right.
Good Luck!
