| Post subject: | transmission bolted to engine wrong? |
my starter is hitting for like half a second when i turn the key then the starter just spins and doesn't turn the engine. Is it possible my transmission is like couple seconds off of where the bellhousing sits in the transmission and where it bolts on the engine? im not sure i used the right size bolts to bolt it all togethor thanks is this possible ? Dave |

The transmission and engine are aligned with two large dowel pins. If those pins are in place and there isn't a gap between the engine and transmission the two are in their proper relationship. If you use the wrong size bolts to attach the transmission they either won't go into the block or won't tighten up. I'd try a known good starter before anything else. |

ya eather that or my starter relay is going im starting to think my fly wheel is kinda stripped but im not sure how it would spin all if it was.. i changed the brushes core and core housing on my starter and it seemed to kick out and spin real fast i don't know.. |

hello, do what Josh says first. is it an auto? if so is it possible the flex plate has been installed back to front? this will position the ring gear in the wrong spot for the pinion to engage. I have seen it happen once or twice. if its a manual,disregard this post.  regards,Rod

yes it is an auto flex plate is that the piece of sheet steel that is a guard for the tranny so that dirt doesnt get into the fly wheel well i took that off for now i know that the tourqe converter is not backwards Dave |

The flex plate is the drive plate bolted to the crankshaft. It's not flat and the offset of the ears where the torque converter attaches are offset toward the engine. The dust cover is the lower sheet metal plate that covers the lower part of the bellhousing. |

the torque converter bolts straight to the fly wheel it was straight as far as i can tell |

hello, a flywheel is NOT used with an auto. the torque converter has the ring gear for the starter on its outer rim. the converter is attached to the flex plate and the flex plate is bolted to the end of the crankshaft. see here if you have a manual,refer to the section on transmissions and have a look for yourself. as Joshie says,the flex plate is offset with the "ears" towards the engine. or - the concave (dished in) towards the engine. regards,Rod

well aparentlly the teeth on the kick out gear for the starter were considerably worn down after 28 years of starting on the edges so i did some more starter rebuilding from a reman starter. That had a pos core and it works perfect now
